Essential Job Duties

The VP of Data & Business Intelligence will establish and lead a new internal data function that ensures BambooHR’s teams have timely, trustworthy, and actionable insights. Reporting directly to the CTO, this leader will be responsible for defining the data strategy, governance framework, and architecture that empower our internal stakeholders—from product and engineering to sales, marketing, finance, and customer success—to making data-informed decisions. You will build and lead a high-performing team of data engineers, analysts, and data managers who deliver scalable data infrastructure, self-service analytics, and strategic guidance. Your mandate: to transform our data into a key strategic asset, fostering a culture of informed decision-making and driving sustainable business growth.

You will:

  • Define and articulate the overarching data strategy that aligns with BambooHR’s strategic goals and operational priorities.
  • Identify and implement best practices for scalable data architecture, analytics methodologies, and advanced insights delivery.
  • Champion a culture that values data quality, integrity, and ethical data usage across the organization.
  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a diverse, cross-functional team of data engineers, BI developers, data architects, data scientists, and analysts.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and growth-oriented team environment that empowers individuals to reach their full potential.
  • Establish clear performance metrics, career paths, and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Architect and maintain a robust, scalable, secure, and compliant data infrastructure that supports a broad range of internal data needs.
  • Define and implement data governance standards, ensuring high-quality, accurate, and accessible data across all business functions.
  • Oversee data platform vendor relationships and internal tools to ensure the highest levels of performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop enterprise-wide reporting and analytics solutions that provide key stakeholders with timely, relevant, and actionable insights.
  • Promote self-service analytics capabilities, enabling business units to explore data independently while maintaining consistency and accuracy.
  • Drive the advancement of data science initiatives, applying advanced analytics and machine learning where appropriate to solve complex business challenges.
  • Partner with leaders across Product, Engineering, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, and other departments to identify key data needs, surface insights, and shape decision-making.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the executive team, translating data-driven insights into strategic recommendations that support business objectives.

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • 12+ years of experience in data-related fields (data engineering, analytics, BI, data science), with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success in building and scaling data teams and infrastructure at a high-growth or technology-driven company.
  • Proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional data initiatives that delivered measurable business impact.
  • Deep understanding of modern data architectures, including data lakes, warehouses, and cloud-based platforms (e.g., Azure/Microsoft SQL Server/SSIS, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
  • Proficiency with ETL/ELT frameworks, orchestration tools, visualization platforms (e.g., Looker, Tableau, PowerBI), and advanced analytics techniques.
  • Familiarity with data governance best practices, metadata management, and regulatory compliance (GDPR, CCPA).
  • Exceptional ability to influence and inspire at all levels, from C-suite executives to individual contributors.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills—capable of distilling complex data concepts into accessible insights.
  • Strategic thinker who can balance high-level vision with tactical execution.
  • Experience working closely with product, engineering, and go-to-market functions to align data solutions with organizational priorities.

What We Do

For 16 years, BambooHR has embarked on a mission to help organizations and their employees build better workplaces and achieve their unique missions. We call it “setting people free to do great work.” We believe one of the best ways to do this is by transforming workplace friction into workplace freedom by replacing tedious processes with intuitive experiences and turning dispersed data into strategic insights that inform better decisions.

Serving more than 34,000 customers and 3 million employees across 190 countries, BambooHR is more than just HR software—it’s a complete HR ecosystem designed to manage, protect, enrich, report on, extend, and benchmark people data in a way that drives business goals and smarter decision making. Our vision is to become the #1 HR platform for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) around the world, and we empower organizations at every stage to make the most impact. We are proud to serve clients across all industries ranging from startups to household names such as Bitcoin.com, Quora, Le Creuset, MasterClass, and the New York City Ballet.

Why Work With Us
