Summary

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides leadership and operational oversight for nursing services and direct patient care delivery across the facility. The CNO ensures high quality, compassionate, and efficient care while fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The CNO partners closely with senior leadership to drive organizational priorities related to quality, safety, patient experience, employee engagement, and financial stewardship.
The CNO leads, integrates, and evaluates professional nursing practice, serving as a liaison between nursing and medical staff. The role is responsible for establishing and executing strategies that support clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and professional development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute strategic plans for nursing and organizational growth.
  • Lead and manage day-to-day operations, including work force planning and talent development.
  • Foster effective collaboration between nursing, clinical departments, and medical staff,
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Serve as a change agent, leading initiatives for quality, safety, patient experience, and financial sustainability.
  • Oversee integration of care and operations across the organization.
  • Motivate and lead a high-performing, diverse management team; provide coaching and professional development.
  • Maintain current knowledge of clinical practice, healthcare economics, and policy.
  • Champion evidence-based practice and a culture of shared decision-making.
  • Direct the development and management of operating and capital budgets.
  • Represent the hospital in the community and with external agencies.
  • promote nursing research, professional development, and academic partnerships.
  • Maintain visibility and accessibility with staff, patients, and families to promote engagement and trust.
  • Ensure continuity and consistency of nursing care across the organization.
  • Lead and support committees, interdisciplinary groups, and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QualificationsEducation
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, or related field required. Doctoral degree strongly preferred.
  • If Master’s is not in Nursing, Bachelor’s in Nursing required.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State in which nursing care is being delivered to include single state nursing licensure and/ or compact licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, as appropriate for position.
Experience
  • Eight to ten years of progressive leadership experience in nursing, hospital operations, and administration.
  • Experience in hospital administration reflecting increasing executive-level responsibilities.
  • Previous experience as a CNO strongly preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, budgeting, healthcare economics, patient safety, and quality improvement.
  • Ability to create a vision and strategic direction for nursing aligned with organizational goals.
  • Proven ability to build, mentor, and retain high performing nurse leaders.
  • Strong financial acumen and understanding of health care economics.
  • Ability to work effectively in complex academic and clinical settings.
  • Experience in managing clinical services, productivity enhancement, new program development, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations, presentations, and publications.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Direct supervisory responsibility for assigned department managers and/or directors.
  • Indirect supervisory responsibility for leaders and staff in designated departments.
  • Full managerial scope and authority for employment actions, including coaching, selection, training, performance appraisals, work assignments, and disciplinary action.
  • Budgetary responsibility.
Independent Action

Responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating major hospital divisions. Establish standards of performance within a broad framework of policy and objectives as set forth by the president and CNE.

Salary Range: $200,000-$250,000
