About the Role
The Huntington is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, and visually driven Visual Storytelling Intern to join our dynamic in-house creative team. Reporting to the Creative Director, this internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in photography, visual storytelling, graphic design, and content creation across digital and print platforms. The successful candidate will collaborate with designers, marketers, and colleagues across departments to support projects that elevate The Huntington’s visual identity and public engagement. This internship is intended to last 12 weeks with the expected start date in early June.
S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.
Essential Duties
Under the direct supervision of their mentor, the intern will:
Assist in conceptualizing and producing compelling visual stories that align with The Huntington’s mission and brand.
Capture high-quality photography of events, exhibitions, public programs, gardens, collections, and behind-the-scenes moments for use in marketing, digital, and archival purposes.
Photograph portraits, environmental scenes, and in-situ setups as needed for campaigns.
Edit, retouch, and optimize images to ensure high visual quality and brand consistency across digital and print formats.
Contribute to video production tasks such as filming b-roll, assisting with interviews, and editing short-form content for web and social media.
Collaborate with the design team on creative assets for promotional campaigns, print materials, signage, and web graphics.
Assist in maintaining and organizing the internal photography archive and digital asset management system.
Ensure adherence to The Huntington’s visual style guide in all photographic and design outputs.
Participate in brainstorming sessions and creative reviews, contributing original ideas and feedback.
Conduct research on current design and photography trends to inform and inspire new creative approaches.
Support the development of reusable design and photo templates for internal team use.
May perform other related duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements and Experience
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Photography, Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Advertising, Communications, or a related creative field.
Experience photographing events, people, and environments, with a demonstrated eye for storytelling through imagery. When applying, all candidates must include a link to a portfolio showcasing relevant photography and visual design work. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite—especially Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and InDesign.
Understanding of photographic principles including lighting, composition, and editing techniques.
Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Preferred:
Familiarity with DSLR and mirrorless cameras, as well as basic studio lighting and equipment is preferred but not required.
Knowledge of social media best practices and content formats is a plus.
Familiarity with video editing tools such as Premiere Pro or Final Cut is a plus.
Working Conditions
Indoor office setting.
Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times; ability to remain stationary for extended periods; push, pull and bend as necessary.
Moderate noise levels.
Internship Eligibility
Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students (minimum age 18) whose field of study aligns with the internship opportunity.
This internship is available to Los Angeles area residents.
The Huntington will not sponsor J-1 visas for internship participants at this time.
