The Buffalo Bill Museum is seeking a part-time Visitor Services Assistant to welcome and orient guests, process admission sales, provide general administrative support for museum operations, and assist with interpretation, educational programs, outreach, and social media. This role is perfect for an outgoing, detail-oriented individual who loves history and community engagement.

What We Offer

This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. This position will work 16- 32 hours per week and no more than 39 hours per week. The pay range for this position is $20.06 - $30.10/hour.  New hires are typically brought into the organization between $20.06 - $24.49/hour.

This position is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.

Candidates with bilingual skills in Spanish may be eligible to receive a bilingual services stipend of $50.00 per pay period.

Location & Schedule

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is part of the Denver Mountain Parks system and is located in Lookout Mountain Park in Golden, Colorado.  Lookout Mountain Park includes the museum and grave site, an on-site retail store and food concessionaire, a picnic area, and a trailhead. The park offers breathtaking, panoramic views of Golden and Denver.

Public transportation is not available to Lookout Mountain Park and applicants should ensure they have reliable transportation.

The typical schedule for this position is 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., two to four days per week. The role includes working one weekend day and occasional evenings, though specific days may vary.  Scheduled hours may shift depending on seasonal needs and operational demands. This position also requires occasional evening availability to support public programs and community outreach events.

Who We Are & What You’ll Do

The museum collects, preserves, and interprets artifacts and archival materials associated with William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, the Wild West show, and the diverse performers who toured nationally and internationally with the show. We are a small museum with a collection of 9,000 items that are of interest to the public, collectors, and scholars. We attract local, national, and international visitors, and have a high visitation rate in comparison to the size of our staff and building footprint.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for visitors to the Buffalo Bill Museum

  • Interact with the public and internal customers in person, by phone and by email in a professional, courteous manner

  • Answer questions related to the Buffalo Bill Museum and history and assist visitors with research requests

  • Operate the cash register, balance out the register, and prepare reports

  • Keep brochures and foreign language translation guides stocked

  • Open and close the museum

  • Monitor security cameras, contact park rangers or law enforcement in case of an emergency

  • Assist with event preparation, educational programs, and community outreach

  • Present short interpretive programs onsite

  • Create content for social media following museum’s social media plan

  • Create program props, worksheets, handouts, other audio/visual aids, and computer-generated presentations to enhance education and interpretive programs

  • Assist with collections database, which may include photographing artifacts and scanning archival materials

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics: An interest in history

  • Experience working at a museum, cultural or natural history site

  • Experience in cash handling, point-of-sale operations and payment processing

  • Experience in assisting in the research, planning, and presentation of a variety of place-based, curriculum-aligned history and cultural resource programs for diverse audiences, including K-12 students, adults, and Seniors.

  • Certified Interpretive Guide certificate through the National Association for Interpretation or willingness to complete once hired

  • Basic experience using PastPerfect or another artifact collections database

  • Experience providing direct customer service in person, by phone, and via email

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences while maintaining a professional demeanor

  • A valid driver's license

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of clerical experience.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
