MAJOR FUNCTION 

This position facilitates visitor services and supports daily operations at the Polk County History Center, 
including tours, volunteer scheduling, facility use, museum gift shop management, and special events. 
The role ensures delivery of customer service practices that promote positive guest experiences. 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES 

Program and Visitor Services 
• Facilitates programming goals in collaboration with the Cultural Resources Coordinator,
including leading scripted tours, directing school programs, and supporting visitor experiences
in galleries and the gift shop.
• Assists with museum inquiries and provides support to visitors as needed.
• Assists with training volunteers to ensure knowledgeable and consistent service.
Community and Resource Collaboration 
• Coordinates with affinity organizations to distribute collateral materials promoting cultural and
natural resources throughout the county.
• Manages supply levels of collateral materials and arranges for replacements as needed.
Gift Shop Operations 
• Oversees daily operations of the museum gift shop.
• Maintains accurate retail inventory and develops engaging retail experiences for visitors.
• Supports revenue generation to meet budget goals.
• Coordinates with the Museum Assistant on facility use.
• Monitors set-up and use of spaces by clients, caterers, and service providers.
• Troubleshoots issues and facilitates communication among stakeholders to resolve concerns.
• Ensures events and associated services begin and end on schedule, remaining on site until all
vendors have existed.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS 

Knowledge of: 
• Polk County and regional history
• Basic use of personal computers, Microsoft Office, and database software
Skills in: 
• Organization, communication, writing, and presentation
• Problem-solving and independent decision-making
• Coordinating projects involving staff and outside vendors
Ability to: 
• Plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects to meet goals and deadlines
• Work effectively under pressure when necessary
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, officials, and
the public
• Make well-reasoned decisions consistent with policies, procedures, and confidentiality
requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Graduate of an accredited two-year college or university with major coursework in education, 
hospitality, business, or a related field 
One (1) year of experience working with student learners 
Valid Driver’s license required; must obtain a Florida license upon employment. Must maintain a 
clean driving record to operate an assigned county vehicle.  

SPECIAL PREFERENCES 

• Experience coordinating events
• Experience in hands-on cultural settings, including interpretive programs
• Previous presentation experience in an informal or classroom setting

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

• Regular hours for this position are Tuesday – Saturday, evening work may be required.

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, 
employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of 
their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. 

Skills Required
