Pamela Stewart Visiting Professor in Italian Studies, Winter 2027

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at McGill University invites applications for the Pamela Stewart Visiting Professor in Italian Studies for the Winter 2027 term.

The position is intended to bring a distinguished scholar in Italian Studies to McGill for one semester to contribute to the intellectual life of the Italian Studies program, support student engagement, and enhance the Department’s existing curricular offerings.

The Pamela Stewart Visiting Professor will teach two courses in Italian Studies, to be determined in consultation with the Department and in accordance with University regulations and existing curricular needs. The Visiting Professor will also contribute to the broader academic life of the Department through activities such as a public lecture, workshop, seminar, or student-facing event.

Applicants must hold a ranked academic appointment, or its equivalent, at another academic institution. They should normally hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Italian Studies or a closely related field. Areas of specialization are open, although preference may be given to candidates whose work can attract broad student interest while clearly strengthening Italian Studies at McGill.

The appointment will provide support up to a maximum amount of $40,000, structured in accordance with University policies and applicable tax regulations. This amount will encompass the Visiting Professor’s teaching and other academic contributions during the appointment. One round-trip airfare to Montreal may also be included, subject to approval.

Applications should include:

  • a cover letter outlining the applicant’s interest in the position;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a brief description of proposed teaching contributions, including courses the applicant would be prepared to offer;
  • a brief description of a proposed public lecture, workshop, seminar, or student-facing event; and
  • the names and contact information of two referees.

Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. The selected candidate will spend the winter term at McGill, beginning in early January 2027.
