About the Role

The Vice President, Tax leads WildBrain’s global tax function and serves as the company’s senior tax advisor and thought partner across the enterprise. Reporting to the SVP, Finance & Corporate Controller and working closely with the CFO, the role is accountable for the group’s tax compliance, tax accounting and provision, and tax planning across the jurisdictions in which WildBrain operates – with primary emphasis on Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and further exposure to Europe.

This is a lean, high-leverage role. With a single direct report and extensive use of external advisors, the VP is a hands-on technical leader who scopes and directs outside resources efficiently rather than building a large in-house team. The emphasis is on direct tax, with indirect tax managed at a more operational level. Beyond compliance, the role is valued as an internal thought partner – providing the enterprise-wide understanding needed to support efficient, forward-looking tax planning within a public-company control environment (SOX / NI 52-109).

Job Description

Tax Compliance & Governance

  • Own the global direct tax compliance calendar across all entities, ensuring accurate and timely filing of corporate income tax returns, elections, and installments in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and other territories.
  • Direct and coordinate external advisors who prepare returns and provide jurisdiction-specific advice, ensuring quality, consistency, and value for spend.
  • Oversee transfer pricing compliance, including documentation, intercompany agreements, and country-by-country reporting.
  • Maintain a robust tax governance and risk framework, including tax-related SOX / NI 52-109 controls and supporting documentation.

Tax Accounting & Reporting

  • Own the consolidated income tax provision under IFRS (IAS 12), including current and deferred tax, uncertain tax positions, valuation allowances, and the effective tax rate reconciliation, for quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Prepare the income tax note disclosures for the consolidated financial statements and support related MD&A commentary.
  • Partner with the Corporate Controller and external auditors on provision review and tax-related internal controls.

Tax Planning & Thought Partnership

  • Act as a strategic thought partner to the SVP, Finance & Corporate Controller, CFO, and business leaders, providing the enterprise-wide tax understanding needed for efficient tax planning.
  • Advise on the tax implications of the group’s legal-entity structure, financing, cash repatriation, M&A, dispositions, and reorganizations.
  • Model effective and cash tax outcomes of business initiatives and legislative change (e.g., BEPS / Pillar Two) across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Europe.
  • Production tax credits: provide oversight and a broad working understanding of film/animation and content tax credits (which are administered primarily at the business-unit level), acting as a central point of coordination and technical sounding board rather than day-to-day preparer.

Controversy & Relationships

  • Manage tax audits, assessments, and disputes with the CRA, IRS, HMRC, and other tax authorities, coordinating external advisors as required.
  • Serve as the internal tax subject-matter expert for Finance, Treasury, Legal, and the business units.

Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Senior Tax Specialist, and manage the network of external tax advisors, budgets, and engagements.
  • Champion process improvement, documentation, and knowledge retention within a small, outsourced-leveraged operating model.

Qualifications

  • CPA (or equivalent) required; a specialized tax credential – CPA In-Depth Tax Program and/or Master of Taxation – considered an asset.
  • Progressive tax experience, including meaningful public-company and multi-jurisdictional exposure; media, entertainment, or IP-intensive industry an asset.
  • Deep expertise in Canadian corporate tax and IFRS tax accounting (IAS 12), with solid working knowledge of U.S. and U.K. tax regimes and awareness of European considerations.
  • Strong command of international tax and transfer pricing concepts, including BEPS / Pillar Two developments.
  • Experience operating in a SOX / NI 52-109 control environment.
  • ERP-enabled process improvement (asset): demonstrated experience leveraging ERP systems (e.g., Dynamics GP / Business Central) to streamline and automate tax accounting, provision, and reporting workflows.
  • A hands-on, resourceful leader comfortable delivering through a lean team and external advisors, with excellent executive-communication and thought-partnership skills.
