Job Description

THE ROLE: VICE PRESIDENT, PROGRAM RESEARCH
In this role, you'll oversee research initiatives that provide information and insight to our Programming Division and A+E management to support
program development, strategic planning, network positioning, scheduling, and brand extension activities.

MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Act as strategic advisor to brand leaders and senior programming staff effectively voicing fact-based insights and recommendations.
  • Proactively design quantitative research that supports and facilitates programming and strategy decisions in all areas.
  • Fully understands the capabilities and limitations of all audience tracking tools to provide rich viewership insights; and evaluate digital metrics to enhance cross platform performance and strategy.
  • Monitors the regular reporting of network and program performance (daily overnights, monthly network highlights, competitive reporting, cross-platform performance, etc.)
  • Forecasts rating projections for upfront and scatter markets working closely with Ad Sales Research. Audit pacing vs. actuals throughout the year.
  • Presents network and series updates to senior management in weekly meetings.
  • Makes short and long term program, schedule and strategy recommendations based on solid research findings.
  • Effectively transform data into valuable information and communicate findings through written and physical presentations.
  • Works highly collaboratively within the Research divisions
  • People leadership responsibility over a team of 4, including overseeing all on-going requests, helping manager and analyst design projects, set deadlines and manage internal expectations.
  • Plays a senior role in the department, fostering morale and creating a team environment.
  • Works closely with the SVP, Programming Research on key strategic projects.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
As the media industry grapples with fragmentation and disruption, a key facet of Research is to be the driving force in helping their company capture, report on, monetize, and understand audiences. An opportunity lies in Research to work across divisions and departments to create a unified language that ensures that internal clients understand—and take advantage of—complex metrics. The key is giving the necessary context so that decisions can be made. While this sounds disarmingly simple, it is a challenge to get the majority of the company to speak the same language and understand new vernacular. Research is a central force within the broader organization in gaining an objective perspective for a wide array of complex questions. It may sound academic – and certainly there is a portion of the job that requires a love of learning – but the primary attribute that will bring you success is curiosity. For example, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of what motivates someone to tune into a show, buy a product based on placement of an ad, become a fan on social media, or why certain types of programs are successful across regions of this country and abroad. Ultimately, each research candidate gets a better understanding of the rigor that goes into making business decisions by uncovering not boulders, but pebbles along the path to connecting to A+E Networks core asset, its content.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 7 years experience in content research
  • At least 5 years of experience interpreting and synthesizing content data and metrics from standard industry sources (e.g. Nielsen or others)

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL BE:

  • A creative and strategic thinker with strong presentation skills and a passion for the business.
  • Must have a proven ability to deal effectively with senior management and a thorough understanding of the TV industry.
  • Familiarity with digital analytics tools: Adobe Analytics, Freewheel and/or ComScore
  • Basic skills for data analysis programming languages preferred: SQL, R, or Python
  • Experience in Tableau or data visualization software is ideal
