Job Description

The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Job Summary:

The Data Strategy and Solutions team at Vertex is looking for a talented and motivated summer intern to apply their data science skill-set and advanced machine learning methods to address high-value healthcare business questions. This is an excellent opportunity for the intern to work closely with and learn from some of the brightest data scientists, engineers, and strategists in the pharmaceutical industry. Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the data science team on one (or more) projects, which include a variety of collaborations throughout the company across clinical, healthcare, commercial, and operational domains

  • Perform predictive analytics and develop machine learning models to generate insights from disparate and complex data sources

  • Collaborate with fellow teammates to ensure robust, innovative, and impactful solutions

  • Craft visualizations and presentations to "tell the story" behind the data and communicate findings to business partners

  • Represent Data Strategy and Solutions through presentations and project readouts

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD program in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, or related quantitative discipline
  • Practical knowledge in machine learning and/or advanced statistics
  • Strong coding experience in Python and/or R
  • Experience with databases and SQL
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills across technical and non-technical contexts
  • Enthusiasm for working in the healthcare industry and to learn from fellow data scientists throughout the summer
  • Understanding broader data science topics such as LLMs, natural language processing, image processing, deep learning, etc.
  • Experience in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industries
  • Experience Exposure to cloud technologies such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Familiarity with developing and maintaining data science products and applications
  • Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before May 2025
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May - August 2025
