Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
Our vehicle engineers work with the cars of the future every day. We touch every part of the vehicle — electrical and thermal systems, chassis and interiors, power and energy storage and beyond — as we add self-driving power to existing auto designs and create new systems of our own. Our goal: To build a new generation of high-performing vehicles that are comfortable, reliable and safe.
This role follows a hybrid work schedule and reports to a Design Manager.
You will:
- Drive full-vehicle mechanical integration of Waymo’s Self Driving System from early concept exploration through final production build events, ensuring all physical systems are compatible and functional
- Establish and manage clear mechanical interface requirements and specifications as well as the geometric boundaries between internal engineering teams and external OEM partners
- Align cross-functional milestones by managing comprehensive integration roadmaps, design progression schedules, and requirement compliance and verification
- Lead with geometry - Engage daily in the vehicle CAD and drive digital mockup (DMU) strategies, ensuring high-quality CAD tree organization and geometric compatibility
- Manage Engineering Bill of Materials (EBOM) structure release and maturation, from early concept development to prototype release
- Participate in end-to-end vehicle build execution, spanning virtual digital mockups to physical production events, ensuring geometric and architectural intent is meticulously realized in the final hardware environment
You have:
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, systems architecture, or a related technical discipline with a minimum of 8 years of applicable vehicle/transportation experience
- Proven experience in vehicle packaging and mechanical integration, with a track record of driving designs from clean-sheet concept to production
- High level of proficiency (5,000 hours minimum) with advanced CAD design tools, preferably CATIA V5/V6 or 3DX, and lightweight geometry evaluation software (e.g., Vis-Mockup) and establishing digital mockup (DMU) strategies
- Hands-on experience with Bill of Materials (BOM) management, release processes, and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and lead diverse, cross-functional teams of engineers and CAD designers through complex projects
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience navigating relationships between internal teams and external suppliers or partners
We prefer:
- Direct experience working with automotive OEM partners, including managing international partnerships across language barriers and time zones
- Knowledge of sophisticated ADAS/SDS sensor integration and package layout requirements, such as optical ray-tracing or geometric sensor placement analysis
- Experience scripting or creating macros (e.g., Visual Basic) to automate CAD or packaging workflows
- Prior design and release experience with legacy automotive systems (e.g., exterior trim, mirrors, or body components)
- Experience planning and executing technical workshops to negotiate and align with external partners on contractual milestones
Travel:
- Domestic and International Travel: 15%
