Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a User Experience Researcher to join our Insights and Analytics team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

About the role:

Oscar is building a centralized Insights and Analytics function within our Technology organization to shape how the company learns, decides, and builds. This team brings together User Experience Research, Data Science, Analytics, and Market Research to connect what people experience, what our systems reveal, and what the business needs to understand.
As part of this team, Oscar’s User Experience Researchers help the company make product, service, and business decisions grounded in the lived experiences, behaviors, needs, and friction points of the people we serve and support. Our work spans consumers, members, brokers, providers, and internal users across Oscar’s Tech Pillars and family of companies.
In this role you will independently lead research studies in complex product and service areas, using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods to clarify ambiguous problems, de-risk product decisions, and shape strategy. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, Strategy, Operations, Clinical, and Insurance Product teams to turn human insight into clearer priorities, better workflows, and more confident decision-making.

This role is a strong fit for a researcher who is comfortable working in early-stage or ambiguous spaces, can identify the behavioral dynamics underneath a business or product question, and can determine what evidence will meaningfully move a team forward. You will be expected to develop a clear point of view from research, connect insights to business needs, and help mature how research is planned, conducted, documented, shared, and reused at Oscar, including thoughtful use of AI-enabled tools to make insights faster to find, easier to reuse, and more

The base pay for this role is: $163,944.00 - $215,176.50 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end research studies, including scoping, study design, recruiting strategy, moderation, analysis, synthesis, and shareout.
Translate ambiguous questions into research plans that clarify methods, audiences, risks, and decision points.
Conduct research across Oscar’s multi-sided healthcare ecosystem, including consumers, members, brokers, providers, and internal users.
Apply qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods to generate evidence that is rigorous, actionable, and fit for the decision at hand.
Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Data, Operations, Clinical, Strategy, and Insurance Product teams to shape problem definition, roadmap planning, prioritization, product strategy, and launch readiness.

Distill research into strategic recommendations that help teams decide what to build, improve, prioritize, or stop doing.
Strengthen Oscar’s research operations, including intake, planning, recruiting, consent, compliance, repositories, templates, and vendor workflows.
Use AI-enabled tools thoughtfully to accelerate research planning, analysis, synthesis, and knowledge reuse while upholding rigor, privacy, compliance, and human judgment.
Advance ethical and inclusive research practices in a regulated healthcare environment, including privacy, security, accessibility, language, incentives, and hard-to-reach population considerations.

Help mature Oscar’s research practice by introducing useful methods, tools, documentation patterns, and industry learnings.
Mentor junior researchers and research-adjacent partners where appropriate.
Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of hands-on user research, product research, design research, or applied research.
  • Experience independently leading research studies with moderate to high complexity and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skill collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing human behavioral data to inform product, service, or business decisions.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative methods, with strong judgment about which method fits the decision at hand.
  • Experience turning ambiguous questions into clear research plans, actionable insights, and strategic recommendations.
  • Experience communicating research findings through compelling artifacts, frameworks, presentations, or workshops.
  • Experience working with Product, Design, Engineering, Data, Operations, Strategy, or other cross-functional partners.
  • Comfort working within ethical, privacy, compliance, or operational constraints.

Bonus Points

  • Experience conducting research in healthcare, health insurance, benefits, financial services, or another regulated industry.
  • Experience researching multi-sided ecosystems, such as members/consumers, brokers, providers, internal operators, or B2B2C products.
  • Masters or Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Information Science, Anthropology, Sociology, STS, or related technical field, or 2+ years of equivalent work experience.
  • Spanish language proficiency. Experience conducting discovery research and testing features with English and Spanish speaking participants, as well as analyzing consumer insights from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
