The Role

Reuters is seeking an experienced, tenacious and agile reporter to cover major U.S. litigation, with a focus on cases involving urgent questions of executive power and how their resolution could affect the law and the legal profession in the years to come. This Washington, D.C.-based journalist will be expected to produce stories at speed and in depth, ranging from breaking news to sophisticated analyses of legal developments. The reporter must be well-versed in a wide range of topics across the legal industry, with a proven background covering federal and state courts at all levels. The U.S. litigation story has never been so high-profile and fast-moving, and we expect this reporter to be as creative and adaptable as the moment demands.

The successful candidate must be able to work proactively, sourcing widely and taking ownership of multiple stories. He or she must have the flexibility to work across U.S. time zones to ensure Reuters is first, fair and accurate. We highly value reporters who are collegial and collaborative, and this journalist must have demonstrated ability to thrive in a complex news organization. The Reuters Legal team produces stories aimed at a variety of customers--legal professionals, financial professionals and general readers—and the reporter will be expected to understand the needs of all these audiences.

About the Role:

As a U.S. Legal Reporter, you will:

  • Work closely with an editor and collaboratively with a team of legal journalists on a busy, fast-moving news file
  • Develop sources to enable you to produce deeper analyses and scoops while remaining first and fast on breaking news
  • Be flexible as the story changes and anticipate where it’s going next.
  • Coordinate with editors and reporters covering the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and other institutions and beats as needed.
  • Come up with distinctive story ideas and execute them at a very high level of proficiency.

About You:

You will be a good fit for the role of U.S. Legal Reporter if you have:

  • At least ten years’ experience covering law and litigation at a major news outlet.
  • Graduated from a U.S. law school. While this is not a requirement of the job, a strong academic foundation in civil and criminal procedure and Constitutional law would be a major asset and is strongly preferred.
  • Covered legal stories for a professional audience as well as for a broader readership.
  • A strong portfolio of clips that demonstrates your ability to conceptualize stories and make complex legal topics accessible.
  • The proven ability to source with a wide range of people across government, academia and the private bar.
  • A track record of scoops or agenda-setting coverage in legal reporting for a general audience.
