Underwriting Operations Team Lead

As an Underwriting Operations Team Lead, you’ll oversee a team of underwriters and manage the day-to-day operations of an underwriting unit. You’ll ensure service levels are met, underwriting quality is maintained, and staff are supported in delivering excellent results. This role combines leadership, risk analysis, and process improvement in a dynamic environment.

This is a hybrid position requiring both in office and remote work in San Antonio, TX.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead & Develop Teams
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor underwriting staff.
  • Manage performance, provide training, and support career growth.
  • Oversee staffing activities including interviewing and onboarding.
• Guide Underwriting Activities
  • Ensure underwriters operate within authority and company guidelines.
  • Review referrals, post-bind reviews, and policy transactions (endorsements, rewrites, cancellations, renewals, loss control).
  • Support underwriting quality and profitability through effective risk analysis.
• Drive Operational Excellence
  • Monitor workflows to ensure service levels are consistently met.
  • Recommend improvements to underwriting processes and guidelines.
  • Partner with leadership to achieve production and profitability goals.
  • Support projects, system enhancements, and new initiatives.
• Ensure Compliance & Quality
  • Maintain compliance with insurance laws and regulations.
  • Address regulatory inquiries and resolve customer issues.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, quality, and customer focus.
• Collaborate & Adapt
  • Work cross-functionally with other teams to meet business objectives.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge:

• Strong leadership and people management skills.
• Property & Casualty underwriting expertise with solid risk analysis.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Self-starter who works well independently and in a team.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 2+ years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
• Prior leadership or mentoring experience preferred.

In accordance with pay transparency laws and regulations, the following good faith compensation range estimate is being provided.  The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $80,000 per year.  Final compensation will be based on candidate qualifications, geographic location, and other considerations permitted by law.
