Position Overview

The Marine Underwriting Manager will oversee the underwriting of ocean marine insurance products, including cargo, hull, liability, and ports & terminals. This role combines technical underwriting expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring profitable growth, risk discipline, and strong broker/client relationships. The manager will serve as a key liaison between underwriting teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day underwriting operations for ocean marine lines.
  • Review, assess, and approve complex risks within delegated authority.
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and compliance standards.
  • Monitor performance metrics including loss ratios, premium growth, and profitability.
  • Recommend corrective actions to maintain portfolio health.
  • Supervise and mentor underwriters, providing technical guidance and career development support.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and key clients.
  • Provide technical expertise during negotiations and client meetings.
  • Support business development initiatives by identifying opportunities and offering tailored solutions.
  • Streamline underwriting processes to improve efficiency and turnaround times.
  • Contribute to product development and innovation in ocean marine offerings.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and reinsurance arrangements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
  • 7–10 years of ocean marine underwriting experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of ocean marine insurance products (cargo, hull, liability, ports & terminals).
  • Proven ability to manage underwriting teams and portfolios.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Professional designations (e.g., CPCU, or equivalent) preferred.

Competitive Compensation Package includes:

Competitive salary commensurate with experience along with a performance-based bonus

SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $250,000.00 to $270,000 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only. In determining the actual salary within this range, MSIG USA will consider a candidate’s relevant experience, location, and other job-related factors.
