Based in Hartford, CT, this position supports the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer’s mission to drive underwriting excellence across the Personal, Commercial and Specialty businesses at The Hartford.  This role will support a variety of strategic initiatives and operating routines designed to refine, improve and expand the Hartford’s enterprise underwriting capabilities including engagement with underwriting Communities of Practice, development and refinement of underwriting governance protocols and close collaboration with various functional areas that help support underwriting.  In addition, the position will provide consultation and technical underwriting expertise in connection with P&C referral activity within the OCUO.  Accordingly, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate deep underwriting knowledge, exemplary communication skills and the ability to engage with leaders across the company.

WORK ARRANGEMENTS: This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Support the OCUO’s strategic initiatives and assists the Business Units in delivering plan results.
  • Support referrals activity from the field.
  • Support OCUO Underwriting Governance activities including underwriting quality, new product development and authority management. 
  • Identify opportunities and support efforts to develop consistent underwriting processes and procedures across the Enterprise.
  • Drive execution efforts across all business and functional areas, including providing status reports to Senior Leadership
  • Lead or support initiatives to build innovative tools, capabilities and/or processes needed to support our future-state underwriting organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a Commercial Lines Underwriting,  Product Management or comparable role is required;  CPCU or similar designation attractive.
  • Strong technical underwriting skills in core P&C lines of business; experience in property and marine lines lines a plus. 
  • Keen interest in emerging insurance issues and demonstrated ability to draw connections between existing business strategies and evolving threats and opportunities. 
  • Solid understanding of underwriting governance mechanisms, i.e.  quality management, underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority.   
  • Strong analytical & problem-solving skills; solution-oriented mindset with the ability to engage in new ways of looking at problems, processes and solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; good comfort level in developing and delivering presentations to business leaders.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills; ability to interact and collaborate with a broad array of business and functional area colleagues to solve business problems.    
  • Experience building and maintaining strong relationships both internally and externally.
  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$136,400 - $204,600
