Summary:

Responsible for the successful leadership and management of the Personal Lines Underwriting Department.

Duties:

  • Manages the Personal Lines Underwriting process, including developing, implementing, monitoring, and controlling processes, systems, services and budgets.

  • Works with senior management to define priorities, objectives, and Underwriting Strategy and monitor success throughout the year, as well as setting an overall underwriting philosophy.

  • Interacts with other departments such as Marketing, Claims, Insurance Operations, Actuarial Services, and MIS to accomplish department, Underwriting, and corporate objectives.

  • Monitors policy production, risk selection and evaluation, compliance with procedures and guidelines, and develops and implements profitable growth plans with existing, as well as new, agents through product development, book management, and visits to/interactions with our agents.

  • Initiates and responds to requests for evaluation of various policies, practices and actions regarding the underwriting of Safety’s Personal policies, products, underwriting guidelines, target markets, pricing, and reinsurance analysis/coverage.

  • Evaluates product needs and works with Product Management to implement.

  • Prepares annual department goals and objectives that work toward the strategic direction of the company and monitors goal progress and achievement throughout the year.

  • Selects, develops, and appraises department managers and employees and determines appropriate staffing and training, including training plan implementation and ongoing training review and refinement.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Degree (business preferred); MBA preferred.

  • CPCU preferred.

  • At least 10 years of Underwriting and insurance management experience.

  • Successful experience managing Personal Lines Underwriting required.

  • Strong analytical ability, including strong data analysis skills and the ability to understand, utilize, and present findings and insights.

  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, including good public speaking skills.

  • Highly knowledgeable of the New England Personal Lines marketplace and products.

Skills Required

  • Undergraduate degree
  • MBA
  • CPCU designation
  • At least 10 years of underwriting and insurance management experience
  • Successful experience managing Personal Lines Underwriting
  • Strong analytical and data analysis skills with ability to present insights
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and public speaking skills
  • Deep knowledge of the New England Personal Lines marketplace and products
