Underwriting Assistant

Classification: Non-exempt/Full-time

• Reports to: Operations Supervisor

• Travel: 0-10%

Location: New York, NY, Chicago, IL, San Diego, CA, Remote/Hybrid

• Salary Range: $24.00-$32.00/hr.

Role overview

Dual North America is seeking an Underwriting Assistant.

Under direct supervision, the UA provides administrative support to the underwriting team within an assigned area/ region/ function. Works to assist in achieving profitable growth by providing support with marketing, underwriting, business retention and meeting customer service objectives. Actively participates in the underwriting process to support renewal and new business activities.

Role responsibilities

First point of contact for customer inquiries during the account life cycle.

•Rush Clearance and set up of electronic files, including filing. Prequalify risks per underwriting guidelines.

•Generate, edit, and send out a variety of correspondence on behalf of the Underwriters. Ex: Declination letters, quote follow ups, subjectivity reminders

•Respond to client phone calls and emails, which require the ability to understand the products offered.

•Review and issue policies within authority level.

•Review and approve tasks within authority level.

•Follow up for carrier subjectivities.

•Issue Notices and handle in-house mailings as needed.

•Issue endorsements and cancellations/reinstatements according to established underwriting guidelines within required timeframes.

•Issue binders and invoices within authority level.

•Research issues escalated by Underwriting team including review of BPO transactions as needed.

Key requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, business or a related field preferred,

Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school

· 1-3 years administrative or insurance experience preferred

· Foundational knowledge of insurance principles

· Excellent written, verbal and client-facing communication skills

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

· Experience working in a “paperless” environment.

· Ability to follow policies and procedures 

· Self-motivated with strong attention to detail

· Travel up to 10% with an Underwriter to shadow and participate in interactions between Underwriters and brokers

· Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time, with occasional movement in the office to access cabinets and equipment
