Purpose of the role
Support innovation through the development of market-leading insurance products and underwriting practices. You will play a pivotal role in evolving Zego’s underwriting operations, bringing technical expertise, analytical rigour, and a customer-centric approach to our product strategy. This role is central to scaling our underwriting capability across motor insurance segments through automation, data-led decision-making, and continuous improvement.
What you will be doing
- Supported by rigorous data analysis, set and monitor underwriting criteria to optimise quotability and minimise risk exposure.
- Proactively make recommendations for product improvements.
- Drive innovation in underwriting operations
- Uphold principles of fairness and customer-centricity (e.g., Consumer Duty, Fair Value).
- Interpret data and technical information to support business decisions.
What you will need to be successful
Numerical:
- Proficient in advanced data analysis and visualisation using SQL, Python, R, Excel, and Looker; experienced with additional BI and analytical tools as required.
- Ability to present data clearly and accurately in presentations to internal and external stakeholders (Google Slides)
- High attention to detail in evaluating technical and numerical information.
Communication:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret and explain complex policy wordings.
- Capability to explain technical issues in a clear, structured, and logical manner.
Knowledge:
- Solid understanding of underwriting principles and insurance operations.
- Deep knowledge of data analytical skills
- Foundational knowledge of the UK motor insurance market is preferred but not essential, but would require ability to quickly learn from more experienced colleagues
- Technical and practical experience using large data sets and data cleansing
Qualifications:
- Good standard of higher education or relevant professional qualification (e.g., NVQ, CII).Strong analytical / mathematics skills, ideally with a degree in Actuarial, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or Computer Science). Any Chartered Insurance Institute qualification is a plus.
- Experience working in dynamic or growing teams would be advantageous.
