Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a creative & talented UI/UX Designer Intern to help invent the future of electric power. We develop critical products that provide the main interface for protecting, controlling, monitoring, and analyzing the electric power grid. As a UI/UX Designer Intern, you will play a key role in our business by inventing innovative ways to display & interact with the power system via software.
A user-centered design philosophy is essential to meeting the unique needs of our users. As a member of the UI/UX Team, you will find yourself working alongside and collaborating with UI/UX Designers, UX Researchers, and Front-End Software Developers. Your flexibility and willingness to assist where needed, learn a variety of new skills, communicate with a wide variety of teammates, and work on multiple projects simultaneously is crucial.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about solving complex Enterprise UX problems, working in a technical design environment, will have experience designing user interfaces, be expert and detailed in their craft and champion the user’s needs in all cases. They will be adept at transforming complex tasks into intuitive workflows, converting complex information into accessible & rich data visualization, taming complex systems with elegant information architecture, and inventing new ways to perceive, predict & interact with the electric power grid.
As a UI/UX Designer Intern, a typical day might include the following:

End-to-end design of software products with world-class user experience including wireframing, low and high fidelity mocking, prototyping, etc.

Participating in an environment of open collaboration, critique, and communication.

Applying user experience design and validation principles & techniques.
-
Applying visual design and communications principles & techniques.
-
Developing moderate expertise in at least one SEL-specific problem domain.
-
Participating in conducting user experience research and validation.
-
Designing solutions to a wide range of complex problems requiring UX creativity and ingenuity.

Working under the general supervision of Design Leads, following established procedures.
This job might be for you if:

You are actively enrolled in pursuing a BA/BS/BFA degree in interaction, graphic or visual communications design, human computer interaction, or a related field.

You have interest in designing, prototyping, and testing user interfaces for one or both of the following areas:
-
Web, mobile, and/or desktop applications
-
Hardware and embedded hardware displays
-

You have experience with graphic design, interaction design and display design principles.

You have experience with the methodologies and techniques of user experience design.

You have a moderate understanding of user experience research methods, including how to participate in research and integrating research results into design.

You have experience with or a desire to learn UI/UX design in sophisticated problem domains.

You have experience with or a desire to learn UI/UX design in a business-to-business environment.

You have experience with or a desire to learn in a complex Enterprise UX environment.
