The Role

The FT is looking for a Turkey correspondent to cover the politics, foreign policy and economy of this vibrant but troubled nation of 85mn people.

The position is open at a time when Turkey is grappling with painful economic reforms and the Middle East is in a deepening crisis. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is tightening his more than two-decade grip on power as he seeks to navigate the regional turmoil and manage growing domestic pressures, with an opposition reinvigorated by its shock success at this year's local elections.

The correspondent will work closely with a range of desks, primarily World and Markets, but also writing regular Big Reads and periodic magazine features. The beat encompasses a wide array of topics, from the gyrations of the Turkish lira and sky high inflation to Turkey’s military operations in Syria and beyond. You will be highly adaptable, able to turn your attention to the latest policy initiative by the central bank, the machinations of Erdogan, his AKP party and the Turkish opposition or Ankara’s complex relations with the west and Russia — sometimes all within a single day.

Turkey can be a challenging working environment. But it is also a highly rewarding beat, with a story that is of great interest to the FT readership.

The job will be based either in Ankara or Istanbul. Either way, travel between those cities - and across Anatolia - is an important element of the job. Fluent Turkish is a strong advantage but not essential.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Thursday 7th November 2024.
