The position
We are currently looking for a Trade Compliance Specialist for the Global Trade Compliance Team.
Our new team member will support the Trade Compliance Team in ensuring global trade compliance, with a focus on supporting compliance in terms of exports from and imports to the United States. You will be based in Wichita, KS (working from home is possible) and you will report to the VIAVI Global Trade Director & Senior Counsel based in Arizona, US.
This position is well suited for an experienced candidate, looking to contribute to their place of work while working in an autonomous manner within a given framework and given reporting lines. The ideal candidate is a specialist passionate about their chosen field, who will be able to add value to a growing organization in both the short and long term.
Primary responsibilities:
Together with the VIAVI Global Trade Compliance Team you will be responsible for the maintenance and deployment of the VIAVI Trade Compliance policy and supporting procedures and you will train others in the relevant procedures.
After appropriate orientation, your daily work includes, but is not limited to:
- Assisting in the prompt response of all internal and external customer emails in shared inbox
- Reviewing of sales orders and managing various kinds of export compliance issues, such as export license determinations; licenses and approvals and ensuring proper end-user documentation is obtained and verified
- Preparing, auditing submitting and administering administer BIS and ITAR export licenses
- Preparing, maintaining, and administering technology assistance agreements (TAAs)
- Keeping thorough records for all BIS and ITAR export licenses and license exemptions/exceptions
- Reviewing change orders in Agile regarding classification
- Vetting employees, contractors and contract manufacturers and providing ITAR/EAR6 access in Agile
- Helping classify technology and goods for import and export, assigning USML, ECCN and HTSUS, assist in drafting commodity classification requests, and commodity jurisdiction requests for submission to BIS and DDTC
- Keeping DDTC Registration current and up-to-date
- Providing guidance regarding import and export regulatory requirements and procedures
- Creating and maintaining trade compliance documents including work instructions and procedures
- Providing clearance information to and assessing accuracy and timeliness of import filings from our Customs broker(s)
- Reviewing and releasing export holds in our Trade Compliance Program (One Source) in a timely manner
- Assisting in the development and presentation of import/export control training materials and conducting internal training to key personnel on trade compliance matters
- Maintaining records for and submitting reports to various government agencies to meet regulatory requirements
- Assisting in the auditing of export shipments on a monthly basis
- Assisting in analyzing and providing ongoing improvements to VIAVI’s import/export processes

- Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience
- Must be a U.S. Person
- Relevant professional experience in Trade Compliance
- Understanding of government regulations with primary focus on International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and Customs requirements
- Knowledge of applicable industry practices and standards related to U.S. Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) and Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) licensing and classification
- Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to communicate and interact at all levels and support decision making based on credible knowledge of International Trade
- Ability to easily understand complex technical products. This could have been gained from previous experience in a similar manufacturing company
- Experience with an enterprise-class ERP system desirable (Oracle preferred) and Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point and other standard office tools
