JOB SUMMARY: 

This employee coordinates and directs the activities of an assigned group of employees. This includes planning and assigning work, training and communicating policies. He or she also performs other duties as assigned. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Promote safety, teamwork, dependability, skill development, reliability, customer satisfaction, initiative, and productivity among assigned employees. Refer personnel problems to the supervisor for resolution. 
  • Provide technical assistance to employees. This may include: 
    • Evaluating and observing manufacturing processes and work methods. 
    • Researching product information and technical specifications. 
    • Brainstorming ideas for new designs and planning course of action. 
    • Troubleshooting and correcting problems with tools, equipment, machinery, etc. 
  • Provide training to assigned employees in proper work methods, safety, ergonomics, ISO standards, company policies & practices, etc. 
  • Aid in the planning and prioritizing of the activities of assigned employees, help establish appropriate goals and measure desired results. Communicate priorities and activities to peers and supervisors. 
  • Participate in the hiring process with the supervisor by interviewing and aiding in the selection of new employees. 
  • Provide input on evaluations of performance for assigned employees. This includes observing and noting behavior and measuring performance. This also includes active participation in evaluation meetings. 
  • Help coordinate activities between other groups or departments. This may include procuring parts or materials, sharing resources, solving problems, adjusting priorities, and modifying tools/machinery/equipment. 
  • Constantly evaluate and recommend measures to improve the service and efficiency of the assigned group. 
  • Use computer systems to record and manage activities of assigned group and access product information. 
  • Help the supervisor encourage departmental cleanliness, cooperation, and good work habits. This includes providing an example for assigned employees of appropriate work behavior. 
  • Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Construct new or replacement components for diecast dies, trim dies, plastic injection molds and CNC machine fixtures.
  • Analyze tooling issues and correct or make recommendations for proper solutions.
  • Experience working with CAD/CAM software.
  • Must understand and utilize algebra, trigonometry and geometry math skills as they apply to work at hand.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The environment in which this employee works includes: 

  • Manufacturing plant conditions (indoors, with variable temperature and humidity, noise, and dirt). Relatively high temperatures. 
  • Use of personal protective equipment. (ref. Toro Safety Policy) 
  • Physical hazards such as sharp objects, moving machinery, electrical arc-welding equipment, high-voltage power supplies and materials handling. 
  • Working with hazardous materials, including but not limited to, solvents, oils, grease, paint and pressurized gases. 
  • Highly variable duties, workloads, and priorities. Changes often happen with little advance notice. 
  • Workdays of up to 11 hours, along with some work on Saturdays. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Have an exemplary work record, including indications of strong leadership skills, self-motivation, high productivity, dependable, always giving attention to quality and ability to learn new skills. 
  • Have a cordial, cooperative personality and work well with others in a team setting. Be able to communicate effectively over the phone and before groups of people. Must project a professional image. 
  • Have experience in metal fabrication with strong welding background. 
  • Have training or experience in reading machine drawings and personal computer operating in Windows environment. 
  • Have well-rounded working knowledge of mechanical devices, pneumatics, hydraulics and electronics. 
    • Build a variety of tools, engineering changes, molds, templates, fixtures and jigs. 
    • Set-up, adjusts and operates all types of machine shop equipment. Select and lay out materials. 
    • Draw sketches and calculate dimensions as required. 
    • Repair or modify existing tools. 
    • Calculate shrink rate dimensions for different plastics. 
    • Operate EDM. 
    • Heat Treating. 
    • Troubleshooting processes. 
    • Team player with the ability to work on miniature, close-tolerance parts and fixtures with minimum supervision. 
    • Assist other employees as directed. 
    • Train mold technicians to increase their knowledge and skills in the areas of troubleshooting and mold repair techniques. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned or are not included here but are within the context of duties defined.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Construct new or replacement components for diecast dies, trim dies, plastic injection molds and CNC machine fixtures.
  • Analyze tooling issues and correct or make recommendations for proper solutions.
  • Experience working with CAD/CAM software.
  • Must understand and utilize algebra, trigonometry and geometry math skills as they apply to work at hand.
  • Must have the ability to read detailed prints and perform work from drawings, sketches and CAD models.
  • Must understand the mechanical properties of tool steel and heat treating.
  • Is responsible for keeping work area clean and tool room equipment in good working order.
  • Oversee apprentice and tool & Die Specialist work and advise/assist on methods and workmanship.
  • Able to do all work assigned to the Tool & Die Department.
