About the Role
Timber-Tech Truss is looking for an experienced Design Manager to lead and manage our design team, ensuring timely, accurate, and cost-effective design of engineered wood products (EWP) and truss systems. This role is central to our transition toward a centralized design function, driving consistency, efficiency, and scalability across all locations.
You'll work closely with the General Manager to align design priorities with business growth objectives, provide technical leadership, and continuously improve our design processes, tools, and team capabilities.
Please note: this role may require occasional site visits, as well as periodic travel to our Lethbridge location.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership & Management
- Lead, coach, and mentor the design team, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture
- Ensure consistency in design standards, processes, and output across all designers and locations
- Promote alignment, collaboration, and knowledge sharing to support unified design delivery
- Assign projects, monitor progress, and ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality
- Conduct performance reviews, identify training needs, and build professional development plans
- Facilitate regular design team meetings to discuss priorities and share best practices
Design Oversight
- Drive standardization of design practices, templates, and workflows across locations
- Ensure design output balances structural integrity, cost efficiency, and constructability
- Oversee all truss (including floors) and EWP design projects for code and spec compliance
- Review and approve high-value designs prior to release for manufacturing
- Ensure accurate, efficient use of design software, providing training and support as needed
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work with sales teams to interpret project requirements and provide accurate design estimates
- Collaborate with operations to keep designs practical, cost-effective, and manufacturing-optimized
- Align design output with business goals and customer expectations alongside the General Manager
- Participate in site meetings and project discussions to support design accuracy and coordination
- Collaborate with sales, operations, and field teams so designs reflect real-world construction conditions
Process Improvement & Innovation
- Evaluate and recommend new design software, tools, and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce errors, speed up turnaround, and boost customer satisfaction
- Stay current on industry trends, building code changes, and engineering advancements
Customer & Stakeholder Support
- Provide technical expertise to customers, builders, and internal teams
- Support resolution of design-related issues during project execution
- Represent Timber-Tech professionally at customer meetings, trade events, and industry functions
- Other duties as assigned
What You Bring
- Post-secondary education in Engineering, Architectural Technology, or Design preferred
- Minimum 7 years of experience in truss or engineered wood product design, including at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Proficiency in design software (Mitek, AutoCAD) and strong knowledge of building codes
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and team development skills
- Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization abilities
- High attention to detail with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Clear communicator, able to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences
- Collaborative approach with a focus on building strong internal and external relationships
Skills Required
- Minimum 7 years of experience in truss or engineered wood product design
- At least 3 years of experience in a leadership role
- Proficiency with Mitek design software
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Strong knowledge of building codes
