Testing Specialist (Chelsea, MA)

Pay Range: $60,000 - 80,000 

Summary:

The Testing Specialist is responsible for supporting the testing of product and process conformance in a timely and effective manner. Supporting the company’s policies, procedures, and activities involved in assuring the quality of manufactured products. Including supporting the Quality department responsible for the inspection and testing for cable and wire products to ensure they meet all quality standards, specifications, and regulations.

The Testing Specialist is critical in contributing to the fundamental changes that are critical to FEC’s Quality Control department. This position is instrumental in enhancing and strengthening our operations and quality to enable the growth and development of the business by driving improvements in capacity, efficiency, and productivity within the Quality Control department. This position’s primary focus is to contribute and execute the team’s strategic plans for operational optimization, expansion, and sustainability within the Testing department.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • This position reports directly to the Sr. Quality Manager and is primarily responsible for the testing department in Chelsea, MA but may occasionally need to support the Braintree location.
  • Must have a clear understanding of FEC’s processes, customer requirements, and applicable standards.
  • Lead Programmer of FEC’s Automated Test Machines. Must ensure existing programs consistently meet requirements.
  • Program and if needed and operate Thermal Shock chamber IAW customer requirements.
  • Calibrate automated test machines.
  • Support team members in the Testing department and help ensure they are performing effectively and efficiently.
  • Work with the QC Manager and Engineering in flowing the required test parameters per customer requirements to the Testing team and ensure Testing Team is using proper equipment to test product.
  • As needed, teach personnel proper methods to tests such as Continuity, Dielectric Withstanding Voltage, Insulation Resistance, TDR, Insertion Loss, and troubleshooting techniques in the safest practices. Other testing to be determined as needed.
  • Maintain testing equipment, accessories, and testing area. Ensure equipment is function as intended, organized, and maintained properly.
  • Work with Engineering and Purchasing to review and procure the necessary equipment needed to assure the needed test equipment is in place, including but not limited to test mates, electrical equipment, and components.
  • Configure and facilitate the building of test adapters for test equipment to ensure testing processes are efficient and effective. Manage the process with the help of the Assistant Electrical Test Engineer.
  • When needed, ensure testing equipment and mates are repaired in a timely manner.
  • When required, perform various functional tests and inspections on cable and wire products to ensure they operate as designed and meet requirements e.g. Continuity, DC Current Resistance, DWV/HiPot, IR, Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), Insertion Loss, Phase Delay Matching, and Thermal Shock.
  • Ensure the results of all tests, inspections, and calibrations are recorded and retained. Create, update, compile, save and maintain documentation into internal database.
  • Lead the troubleshooting efforts of nonconforming cables, fill out nonconformance reports and communicate findings to Quality Manager.
  • Detect and report unusual or non-conforming documentation, materials, conditions, equipment, or product to Quality Manager.
  • Assist and sometimes lead Root Cause and Corrective Action efforts.
  • Work with various internal personnel and departments to communicate and resolve quality issues.
  • Maintain and create a clean, uncluttered environment that reduces waste and optimizes productivity by following the 5S steps: sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain.
  • When required, help with continuous improvement efforts.
  • More additional responsibilities may be applicable per the Quality Manager

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. They must also have the ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), color vision, depth perception and ability to focus.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Technology, or a related discipline or a strong electrical technical aptitude with at least two years of experience working in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with IPC/WHMA-A-620 and/or J-STD-001 is strongly desired.
  • Skills: Working knowledge of Electrical Engineering, self-driven, problem-solver, organized, troubleshooting, attention to detail, effective communication, team player, and multi-tasking.
