How You Will Contribute:

Ciena’s Optical Modem New Product Introduction Program and Capacity Management team is looking for a Mechanical Test Engineer to be part of the team responsible for supporting Contract Manufacturers (CMs) for existing product offering as well as for the next generation of optical transport products and components (100G, 200G, 400G, 800G, UULH).

The role of the Mechanical Test Engineer is to design mechanical and electromechanical test fixtures, jigs and assemblies for product development, working on various projects supporting the Product and Process Engineers as well as CM manufacturing teams to ensure product yields and quality. 

  • Design mechanical aspects of microelectronic packages & modules, integrating elements of mechanical, electrical, thermal, reliability, microelectronic packaging/module integration, manufacturing and test

  • Provide the mechanical expertise of a multidisciplinary development team consisting of optical, Silicon Photonics, IC, RF, reliability, manufacturing/process and test engineering, to design modules and micro/optoelectronic packaging solutions to meet product requirements

  • Generate product documentation including, custom part drawings, assembly drawings, engineering Bill of Materials, common feature drawings and process flows

  • Create/investigate alternative solutions to meet the producibility requirements

  • Estimate the effort to design, document and procure (requisitions or requests) to build mechanical test equipment

  • Follow and meet project development schedule and budget; and track test equipment activity costs as per budget

  • Analysis of assembly and test performance to ensure volume supply can meet business objectives

  • Define specifications for outsourced custom components (local or overseas) and coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers

  • Periodically build, modify and repair test equipment, fixtures and electro-mechanical assemblies

  • Validate and document the test equipment built to ensure compliance to requirements

  • Transitioning Design into Contract Manufacturer (CM) and provide on-site support to CM to address product quality and delivery issues

The Must Haves:

  • 5 years minimum experience in mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering

  • Experience in Micro-optic/electronic assembly technologies such as die bonding, various flip chip process, wire bonding, lens/fiber/optics alignment, laser welding, glass sealing, UV curing and all associated tooling

  • Experience in Elements of RF/Optical package and module design

  • Experience in Micro optical assemblies, fiber optic processes, optoelectronic technologies, related materials, solders, adhesives, related components and manufacturing methods

  • Experience in a formal development project environment is an asset

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Proficient knowledge of 3D CAD tools (preferably Creo/ProE)

  • Basic electronic circuit layout

Assets:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

  • Bilingual (French and English), written and spoken, would be an asset

  • Strong organizational, troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Able to provide feedback to team members in a clear and constructive manner

  • Work with cross functional teams and CM’s around the world to support completing NPI tasks

  • Mechanically inclined (expected to mount, repair & adapt test setups)

  • Ability manage multiple projects at the same time

  • Experience with Agile and Oracle an asset

The annual pay range for this position is $62,700 - $123,100 CAD.
 

Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.

Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
