OVERVIEW:
The Test Engineering Manager is a senior people leader responsible for quality engineering and automation execution across multiple technology portfolios. This role leads QA Engineers and SDETs (Software Development Engineer in Testing) supporting high-transaction retail systems, internal teammate workflows, and distributed service-based applications.
You will be accountable for improving automation depth, strengthening release confidence, reducing escaped defects, and increasing engineering quality maturity across aligned portfolios. Working closely with Product, Engineering, Platform, and Enterprise Automation teams, you will ensure testing practices scale effectively and support predictable, high-quality delivery.
This role balances hands-on technical leadership with team development and measurable operational outcomes.
What You’ll Be Accountable For (Year One Outcomes)
- Increase automation coverage across supported portfolios, reducing manual regression effort.
- Reduce escaped defects and improve release predictability.
- Improve test stability and reduce flakiness in CI/CD pipelines.
- Establish clear quality metrics and portfolio-level visibility into release readiness.
- Strengthen testability practices through early engagement in design and architecture reviews.
RESPONSIBILITIES
People Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and grow QA and SDET teams across multiple portfolios.
- Provide hands-on coaching in automation design, debugging, test architecture, and engineering best practices.
- Establish clear performance expectations, career paths, and skill development plans.
- Build a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and psychological safety.
- Develop emerging technical leaders within the team.
Automation & Quality Execution
- Execute a unified automation strategy aligned to enterprise standards.
- Ensure automation integrates effectively with CI/CD pipelines and release workflows.
- Promote shift-left practices, embedding validation early in the SDLC.
- Strengthen testing across units, API, integration, contract, UI, and end-to-end layers as appropriate.
- Partner with enterprise automation teams to align frameworks and tooling standards.
Quality Metrics & Operational Excellence
- Define and track portfolio-level quality KPIs (automation coverage, defect leakage, stability, release readiness).
- Establish consistent release quality gates and readiness criteria.
- Drive structured root-cause analysis and long-term remediation of recurring issues.
- Provide transparent quality reporting for engineering and product leadership.
Risk Management & Release Confidence
- Identify quality risks early across squads and dependent systems.
- Ensure integration and cross-system testing supports complex retail and service-based environments.
- Partner with product and engineering leaders to proactively mitigate production risk.
- Support post-incident reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate with Product Managers to ensure requirements are testable and measurable.
- Engage early in architecture discussions to improve system testability.
- Partner with DevOps and Platform teams to improve environment stability and automation reliability.
- Represent quality engineering in planning and in release orchestration discussions.
Modernization & Continuous Improvement
- Standardize quality practices across aligned portfolios.
- Introduce and scale modern testing practices such as contract testing, observability-informed validation, and synthetic test data.
- Evaluate and responsibly adopt emerging tools, including AI-assisted test generation and intelligent defect analysis.
- Remove bottlenecks in testing workflows to improve delivery speed without compromising quality.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- 6–10+ years in QA, SDET, or automation engineering roles.
- 2–5 years leading QA/SDET or cross-functional quality engineering teams.
- Strong experience with automation frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and modern testing methodologies.
- Experience working in complex, distributed systems environments.
- Proven ability to improve automation depth and quality maturity at scale.
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross-functional partners.
- Experience in retail, eCommerce, or high-transaction environments.
- Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and containerized systems.
- Experience scaling integration and contract testing practices.
- Exposure to AI-assisted testing or intelligent automation tools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Level Preferred
- Substantial general work experience together with comprehensive job related
- experience in own area of expertise to fully competent level. (Over 6 years to 10 years)

Targeted Pay Range: $95,200.00 - $158,800.00. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that could include other components such as: incentive, equity and benefits. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
