Summary

The Test Engineer is a key support role in the Engineering Team. This role entails performing engineering tests and experiments, management of testing equipment, and compiling inspection reports. This position is critical in ensuring the Engineering team gets accurate and timely data that is needed to make well-informed product decisions. Position reports to the Sr. Director of Eng.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Cell testing execution: Run standard and non-standard charge/discharge cycling, rate capability, capacity checks, formation, DCIR/HPPC, temperature performance, and EIS as part of the qualification process utilizing Arbin and Neware testers/cyclers and environmental chambers. Build and validate test schedules, wire fixtures, mount thermocouples, and utilize pressure and swell setups.
  • Safety, abuse, and environmental testing: Perform safety tests including overcharge, hot box, external short, nail penetration, thermal cycling, vibration, and altitude testing complying with UN38.3, IEC 62133, and UL 1642 certification standards.
  • Test lab and equipment management: Support installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, uptime tracking, and spare parts for the various testing and formation equipment (Arbin and Neware).
  • Documentation and quality systems: Create data summary reports, inspection reports, write and redline test plans, SOPs, and work instructions; maintain traceable records; support nonconformances, Corrective Actions and Preventive Actions (CAPA), and Engineering Change Orders (ECO) under ISO 9001.
  • Cross-functional support: Run tests on cells and components to support engineering development (CT scanner, resistivity, adhesion tester, Keyence, etc.). Support execution, documentation, SOP, and training of cell and component Incoming Quality Checks (IQC).
  • Champion best safety practices: Implement and adhere to the proper safety protocols during cell testing and formation. Recognize when a cell is behaving abnormally and stopping the test. Take initiative to recommend and implement improvements in efficiency and safety.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience with battery testing methods and equipment.
  • Strong technical background.

Physical Demands and Working Condition:

  • Fremont, CA: This is an on-site job. Reliable commute or planning to relocate before starting work is required.
  • Be able to lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May be required to stand, sit, squat, bend, kneel, twist, crawl, reach, lift, balance, push, and pull.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, respirator and safety shoes.
