OVERVIEW
Marc Jacobs International, powered by the creative genius of Marc Jacobs, seeks a Temporary Designer to join the Design team based in its New York City (SoHo) headquarters.
The Designer plays a critical role in supporting the Creative Director and design team through the entire lifecycle of a collection — from fabric, color and print selection, concept research, and development to both runway and sales presentations. This role is especially essential during show season, when the other Designer is fully dedicated to nonstop fittings. For fittings to run smoothly while design development continues, the Collection Designer is responsible for handling trials, updating boards, and maintaining communication with styling and category teams and keeping the studio organized. Without this role, critical design, communication, and development tasks cannot be completed in parallel with fittings, causing significant delays and inefficiencies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Season:
  • Participate in fabric and trend meetings to understand seasonal direction and Marc’s vision.
  • Reference past Marc Jacobs collections by managing archival boards, fabrics, and color libraries.
  • Liaise with the UOVO archive and PR for retrieval of collection pieces.
  • Contribute to competitors and industry show reviews for trend alignment.
  • Prepare studio materials (printing shows, headers, research boards).
  • Source vintage both in-person and online for seasonal inspiration.
  • Support VIP projects and facilitate communication with cross-functional teams.

In-Season (Critical Period):
  • Develop trials for finishes, embellishments, and construction methods while Ryne is in fittings.
  • Source fabrics, trims, and materials in real time during fittings.
  • Create and maintain detailed style boards (photos, colors, cancellations, mockups) for use across all teams.
  • Communicate changes from styling and Marc to design and atelier teams during fittings.
  • Act as a point of contact with styling, production, knitwear, handbag, and shoe teams.
  • Ensure fittings are not disrupted by running parallel design development tasks outside the fitting room.

Post-Season:
  • Oversee shipments to UOVO and maintain archival records.
  • Archive vintage and in-house collection pieces following standards.
  • Reorganize studio post-season (boards, inspiration, trials).
  • Assist sales team with model dressing for Bergdorf and client meetings.

Core Competencies & Specialized Expertise:
  • Parallel Development Support: Ability to keep design development progressing while fittings are underway.
  • Photoshop Visualization: Produce mockups that clearly communicate fabrics, silhouettes, and design intent across departments.
  • Sample Room Communication: Translate seasonal direction into actionable development instructions.
  • Research & References: Source inspiration aligned with Marc and Joseph’s standards and past references.
  • Archival Management: Maintain and navigate the Marc Jacobs archive to ensure historical continuity.
  • Board Creation & Maintenance: Provide accurate, up-to-date visual communication tools for cross-functional use.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Deep knowledge of Marc Jacobs runway history, fabrics, and color standards.
  • Strong organizational and archiving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Photoshop and visual communication.
  • Ability to work under pressure during show season and anticipate team needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to liaise across multiple teams under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Previous experience in fashion design, development, or archival research preferred.
