About the role

Inside Higher Ed is seeking a temporary full-time reporter to cover non-traditional students and institutions during a staff member’s nearly four-month leave. The beat includes religious institutions, minority-serving institutions (HBCUs, HSIs, etc.), and community colleges, with a focus on low-income students, first-generation students, undocumented students, adult learners and student parents. The reporter will also cover workforce development, microcredentials and career-focused educational programs such as apprenticeships and internships.

Duties include:

• Reporting and writing 2-3 500-1200-word stories per week, either assigned or conceived by you

• Writing 2-3 Quick Takes weekly, short, 250-300-word items aggregated from other news sites.

• Attending twice-weekly editorial meetings

We’re looking for someone with:

• A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in education or public policy reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to report on racial and socioeconomic inequities with rigor, nuance, and sensitivity.

• Strong news judgment and the ability to generate original story ideas.

• Comfort working in a fast-paced digital newsroom with daily deadlines

• Familiarity with higher education data sources (IPEDS, NCES, institutional research) is a plus

The details

This is a full-time, temporary position anticipated to run from August 3 - November 25. The reporter will work closely with IHE's senior editorial staff and contribute across the publication's coverage areas as needed. The position is hybrid; preference given to candidates able to work in person three days a week in our Washington, D.C. office, located in the Dupont Circle area.
