DESCRIPTION
Summary
Michael Baker International is seeking a Telecommunications Designer (RCDD) in our Salt Lake City (Midvale), UT market. The Telecommunications Designer will play a key role in planning and designing complete low‑voltage and electronic communication systems across a range of project types, working alongside experienced designers and engineers. This role offers hands‑on involvement in the design of structured cabling, electronic security, and audio/visual systems for commercial, industrial, military, and institutional facilities.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, practical design experience, and a solid understanding of industry standards to support system layouts, calculations, specifications, and construction documentation. RCDD‑credentialed professionals will find opportunities to apply their expertise across diverse systems—including access control, CCTV, DAS, SCADA, and structured cabling—while contributing to high‑quality, code‑compliant designs and collaborating across disciplines from concept through construction.
Job Description
- Designs and specifies complete electronic communication systems, facilities, components, and products for commercial, industrial, military, and domestic purposes.
- Completes electronic communication system designs for structured cabling, audio/visual, and electronic security systems under the direction of the designer of record, with moderate supervision from senior electronic communication designers.
- Performs analysis, calculations, design, and evaluation for sizing cable fill, horizontal distribution pathways, and rack calculations for patch panel quantities.
- Reviews project requirements and specifications and confers with other disciplines and managers to determine assistance required for plan preparation, evaluation of project conditions, design changes, and reports.
- Prioritizes, tracks, and maintains project elements, costs, and schedules across multiple projects.
- Directs activities to ensure construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
- Develops high-quality technical documents, including specifications, electronic communication design files, and reports.
- Performs client and project needs assessments, determines potential solutions, and ensures satisfactory customer service.
- Attends project meetings to present design concepts and make adjustments to meet client requirements.
- Studies applicable design manuals related to project requirements.
- Prepares design analyses and edits specifications for applicable electronic communication systems.
- Utilizes appropriate design software and fundamentals to prepare project design documents.
- Performs detailed technical and peer reviews.
- Occasional to moderate travel may be required.
- Responsible for maintaining professional licensure.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May provide guidance or informal training for less experienced personnel.
Required Experience
- 8+ years of professional experience.
- Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD)
- Minimum of a two-year technical degree or certification in Communication Design or a related field, including drafting.
Preferred Experience
- Computer and general office skills
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- Experience in electronic communication design, including structured cabling, electronic security systems, and audio/visual design
- Knowledge of building and design codes, including TDMM, TIA, and UFC standards
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit
- Physical Security Professional (PSP)
- Certified Technology Specialist – Designer (CTS-D)
WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY
The position allows for a hybrid flexible work schedule, with preference for candidates close to our San Diego, CA office. Other available locations for a hybrid flexible schedule are Denver, CO, Salt Lake City, UT, Phoenix, AZ or Seattle, WA.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $111,000- $150,000. The actual salary offered will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
