Focuses on operating computer and/or mechanically controlled machine tools to produce and repair precision metal molds or tools and for use in manufacturing including:
•Analyzing blueprints, computer-aided design (CAD/CAM/CAE) models, and engineering specifications to define the dimensions and features of the cutting/shaping tools, forms, molds, gauges, and jigs/fixtures to be produced
•Determining the optimal tool path to fabricate/shape the tool/mold by selecting appropriate machine tools (e.g., lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, boring machines, etc.) and specifying the sequence of tool operations
•Manually setting up/adjusting machine tools and/or loading instructions into computer numeric control (CNC) systems
•Recommending revisions in design and/or substitutions in material based on machinability or fabrication problems encountered

 

Requires advanced knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and may require vocational or technical education. Responsibilities may include: • Working under limited supervision for non-routine situations and may be responsible for leading daily operations. • Training, delegating and reviewing the work of lower level employees. • Problems are typically difficult and non-routine but not complex.
