Job Summary
Under an OB/Gyn physician's supervision, the sonographer performs obstetric and gynecological ultrasounds, following established guidelines. The sonographer selects proper imaging techniques, operates ultrasound equipment to obtain proper images and provides an initial interpretation of the exam to the appropriate physician. The applicant needs to have a commitment to patient safety, cultural sensitivity and continuous professional growth. The ultrasound unit is based on strong teamwork and communication skills. Obstetric ultrasound duties include first trimester dating, a complete standard fetal anatomy scan, fetal echocardiograms, Doppler studies, multiple gestations and assisting with procedures. Gynecological ultrasound duties include performing advanced transvaginal /transabdominal and Doppler studies, support the diagnosis of elective complex conditions-fibroids, endometriosis and adnexal pathologies, support the diagnosis of first trimester pregnancy complications-pregnancy of unknown location, pregnancy of uncertain viability, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage and basic knowledge of when and how to procure 3D volume data sets.
Essential Functions:

  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician. (10%)
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. (10%)
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. (10%)
  • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. (10%)
  • Transmits studies to Digisonics, completes reports in EMR and all information as required including appropriate billing codes. (10%)
  • Prepares preliminary reports and coordinates care and/or follow-up with attending physicians when indicated, according to established protocols. (10%)
  • Independently reviews daily work schedule and coordinates with the scheduling desk as required. (5%)
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care. (5%)
  • Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, maintains ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies. (5%)
  • Sterilizes ultrasound probes in accordance with the Trophon protocol. Maintains logs of all testing and changing of Trophon supplies. (5%)
  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation with AIUM. (5%)
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member. Opens a ticket for service as needed. (5%)
  • Provides in-service education on requirements of sonographic procedures as requested by other members of the health care team. (5%)
  • Manages incoming referrals on a daily basis. (5%)

Education:

  • Associate's Degree Completion of two year hospital or college program accredited by the American Medical Association. Required

Work Experience:

  • less than 1 year Required
  • 1-3 years Years' experience performing OB and GYN ultrasound exams and high risk (level II) OB ultrasound exams, preferred.

Licenses:

  • RDMSOBGYN-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer OBGYN - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and procedures, including amniocentesis.
  • Ability to adhere to all AIUM guidelines.
  • Ability to addresses problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve in the moment.
  • Must show a high degree of judgment and skill in the use of US equipment and related technology.
  • Demonstrated technical skill sets in the performance of US imaging studies.
  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.
  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for US imaging studies.
  • Ability to consistently produce quality images.
