Job Description

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

We're looking at adding a further Technician to our team to assist with the surveillance and monitoring of our dam structures and surroundings.

As a Field Technician in the Dam Safety Team at Contact Hydro, you’ll be contributing to the Dam Safety Assurance Programme by being the guardian of our hydro assets and surroundings. One day you could be walking through our dams inspecting the structures, and recording data from the pressure gauge systems the next day you could be on a boat conducting lakebed surveys and monitoring our eel traps. Another day could be spent using a 4WD or drone to survey the surrounding landscapes and reporting back any significant changes.

In this role, you’ll also be a key player in monitoring and promoting health, safety, and environmental (HSE) compliance. You’ll help develop and implement HSE policies, support continuous improvement initiatives, and work closely with your team to maintain high standards of safety and efficiency. Whether it’s assisting with maintenance projects, or responding to emergencies, your contributions will be vital to the success of our Hydro team and facilities.

If you’re someone who enjoys a good mix of the indoor and outdoor work, has a keen eye for detail, and is passionate about protecting our environment, this role is for you.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe | About you

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring a diverse skill set and a willingness to learn. Your background might include experience in monitoring or surveillance already, or other technician roles within the energy, utilities, or environmental sectors. Or you might just read boats and drones and think that's a bit of you.

Either way, you’ll be meticulous with record-keeping and adept at following monitoring schedules. Familiarity with data processing and computer skills will be essential, as will a very basic understanding of civil engineering, geology, and similar fields. Experience with instrumentation and data recorders, as well as assisting with inspections using devices like drones or borehole cameras, will be highly valued but we can also teach to those willing to learn. Experience with 4WDs, boats and drones, working at heights and in confined spaces is a plus but the confidence to learn. Most of all you’ll also be a reliable team player with high personal and professional standards.

Additional Information

There are a bunch of perks to being a permanent Contact kaimahi. Along with great leadership, teammates, development, and growth and progression opportunities, you’ll enjoy flexible working, free health insurance cover, better-than-your-average leave, access to Contact Shares, a ‘Good to be Home’ annual payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, a trail-blazing parental leave policy, discounts on Contact Energy products, and more.

Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet 60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they tick every box. We're not about box ticking, so if you think you have what it takes but don't meet everything stated above, please still get in touch. We'd love to kōrero.
