We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Technical Writer within our Subsurface Engineering Department based in Houston, TX.

Job Description:

Oxy is seeking an experienced Technical Writer with strong written and verbal communication skills in English, as well as experience or education in engineering. The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating a variety of high-quality documents, including weekly reports, newsletters, maintenance procedures, permit requests, technical papers, field development plans, concession proposals, and other technical documents as required. You will join a team of talented geoscientists and engineers who work collaboratively in person and virtually to develop these documents.

Objectives of This Role:

  • Develop clear, concise, comprehensive documentation that conforms to corporate standards.

  • Compile, format, and edit complex technical information into understandable, professional documents using the SPE Style Guide and corporate branded templates.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal teams and subject matter experts to gather information and ensure accuracy and completeness of the documents.

  • Create, format, and edit high-quality technical documents appropriate for the intended audience using the SPE Style Guide and corporate branded templates to ensure consistency and professionalism across all documentation.

  • Write easy-to-understand maintenance and safety procedures and compile weekly reports.

  • Edit and proofread documents to ensure they are error-free and consistent in tone.

  • Edit abstracts and technical paper submissions and administer the in-house approval process.

  • Ensure that documents are completed on time and conform to Oxy’s communications policies and standards.

  • Create tutorials and provide coaching to help colleagues improve the quality of their technical writing. 

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language.

  • Ability to grasp complex technical concepts and write about them in simple terms.

  • Ability to work with engineers and other technical professionals to gather information and ensure accuracy of documentation.

  • Attention to detail and ability to proofread and edit documents for accuracy and clarity.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint, particularly Word templates.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage documentation workflows and processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Previous experience in technical writing or editing for the oil and gas industry.

  • Proficient in Oil & Gas terminology (specifically Geology and Reservoir Engineering)

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degrees and/or experience in both English/Communications and Petroleum Engineering preferred.

  • Proven working experience in technical writing for the upstream oil and gas industry.

  • Familiarity with the Society of Petroleum Engineers Style Guide.

  • Professional certification (e.g., Society for Technical Communication).

  • Experience in using PhotoShop and Adobe Acrobat.
