Overview

The Technical Writer for NPD Engineering supports New Product Development programs by creating, maintaining, and delivering high-quality engineering documentation required for customer and regulatory compliance. This role partners closely with Test Engineering, Design Engineering, and Program Management to transform technical requirements, engineering inputs, customer specifications, and established templates into clear, accurate, customer-ready documentation. The position plays a critical role in improving documentation quality and on-time delivery while increasing technical-writing capacity across NPD programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, update, and support submission of SDRL-controlled documents and comparable customer-controlled technical deliverables for NPD programs, ensuring alignment with customer formats, contractual requirements, and commitment dates.

  • Independently synthesize requirements, engineering inputs, existing technical documentation, customer specifications, and established templates into complete, review-ready technical documents with minimal supervision.

  • Develop and revise Engineering Test Plans and Test Reports in partnership with Test Engineering, accurately documenting test objectives, configurations, setups, methods, data requirements, acceptance criteria, results, and other engineering-provided inputs.

  • Update and finalize Engineering Test Reports based on customer review comments, coordinating with Engineering to ensure each comment is addressed, incorporated, tracked, and fully traceable before resubmittal.

  • Coordinate with Test, Systems, and Design Engineering to gather inputs, clarify requirements, verify technical content, and maintain document alignment with evolving program needs.

  • Translate technical requirements, engineering concepts, specifications, test information, and cross-functional feedback into clear, concise, professionally structured documentation suitable for external customer review.

  • Track customer comment actions, manage document revisions and version control, and support configuration-management requirements throughout the documentation lifecycle.

  • Maintain and improve documentation templates, formatting standards, tone/voice consistency, and technical-writing processes used within NPD Engineering.

  • Participate in internal reviews of Test Plans, Procedures, and Reports to identify clarity gaps, inconsistencies, missing information, or potential customer questions before submission.

  • Support documentation for major customer milestones, audits, qualification phases, and contractual deliverables.

  • Manage multiple technical-document deliverables across parallel NPD programs while adapting to shifting priorities and customer-driven deadlines.

  • Work collaboratively with Program Management and Engineering leadership to communicate documentation status, risks, dependencies, and delivery commitments.

  • Potentially interact directly with customers on documentation topics based on experience, assignment, and program needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent directly relevant experience in technical writing or engineering documentation.

  • Demonstrated experience creating technical documents from multiple source materials rather than solely consuming, editing, or formatting existing documentation.

  • Experience with SDRLs or comparable controlled/customer technical deliverables in a structured technical environment.

  • Experience developing or substantially supporting Engineering Test Plans and/or Engineering Test Reports.

  • Ability to understand technical requirements, engineering concepts, specifications, and test information and translate engineering-provided inputs into clear, accurate documentation.

  • Experience working within formal review cycles and coordinating customer comments or technical feedback through resolution.

  • Working knowledge of controlled document revision, version control, and configuration-management processes or comparable systems.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and standard office productivity tools.

  • Strong written communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to work independently with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage multiple deliverables while maintaining quality and meeting established commitment dates.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Approximately 2 or more years of directly relevant technical-writing or engineering-documentation experience; equivalent capability and demonstrated adaptability will also be considered.

  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, energetics, semiconductor equipment, advanced manufacturing, medical device, automotive, or another highly technical or regulated environment.

  • Aerospace, defense, or energetics technical-documentation experience, particularly supporting customer-controlled deliverables.

  • Experience with formal customer comment matrices, disposition logs, or similar comment-tracking processes.

  • Familiarity with product development processes, test engineering workflows, qualification phases, and customer documentation expectations.

  • Experience interacting with document-management or configuration-control systems; prior Agile experience is helpful but not required.

  • Experience improving technical-documentation templates, standards, workflows, or processes.

What Success Looks Like

  • Within the first 30 days, produces reviewable technical documents from provided requirements, source materials, and examples with limited corrections.

  • Within approximately 90 days, independently produces high-quality, review-ready documentation after receiving initial direction and required source materials.

  • Over time, reduces the documentation burden on Test and Design Engineering by requiring less day-to-day guidance and producing increasingly complete customer-ready work.

  • Consistently delivers assigned SDRL/customer documentation on time and with strong quality, minimizing repeated customer review loops.
