Summary

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots to determine the exact cause of network or data communication problems and repairs personal computers and peripherals 

  • Installs or relocates computer workstations and peripherals 

  • Assists users in determination of software requirements and needs 

  • Performs diagnostic tests on microcomputers, network systems and application software 

  • Maintains accurate records of hardware/software installation and relocation 

  • Monitors transaction logs and modifies programs to provide maximum efficiency 

  • Tests and evaluates hardware and software for efficiency and compatibility with existing network systems 

  • Responds to after-hour calls related to network problems 

  • Performs related duties as required 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Data Processing, Management Information Systems or a closely related field, and two (2) years computer network experience; OR successful completion of a relevant program from an accredited technical school and two (2) years computer network experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Good knowledge of LAN software packages and operating systems; knowledge of programming languages Skill in training users on commercial software packages; skill in troubleshooting and repairing network equipment and peripherals; skill in installing hardware and software; skill in performing diagnostic system tests; skill in logic problem solving

  • Ability to organize programming data in a logical manner and have extensive knowledge of safety standards and practices.

  • Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, Department Heads, Elected/Appointed Officials and co-workers

  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office

  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test

  • Must have available transportation during entire workday; required to travel to remote sites within Bexar County

  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance

  • Required being on-call 24-hours a day

  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek 

Work Environment and Physical Demands:  

  • Working conditions are primarily in an office environment

  • Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 35-40 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard.

  • Subject to sitting, standing, walking, reaching and handling to perform the essential functions
