Software Engineering Manager

Position Overview

Are you ready to help build something extraordinary? At Hillpointe, we’ve launched a lean, high-impact software development team—think start-up energy, but with the backing of a major enterprise platform. As our Software Engineering Manager, you’ll be the technical and organizational force multiplier, leading a talented team to deliver innovative internal-facing applications that drive real impact.

This is a highly visible role: you’ll work directly with company leadership, including our founders, and act as the bridge between vision and execution. You’ll mentor developers, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure our team is organized, motivated, and moving fast. If you thrive in a start-up culture and love juggling priorities, communicating timelines, and building something from the ground up, we want to hear from you!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a six-person development team, fostering a collaborative, fun, and high-performance culture.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between developers, stakeholders, and executive leadership—translating business needs into actionable technical plans.
  • Own and manage the team’s Jira and GitHub repositories, project boards, and deployment pipelines.
  • Organize epics, user stories, and tasks to reflect sprint goals and priorities.
  • Coordinate sprint planning, retrospectives, daily standups, and milestone check-ins.
  • Monitor pull request (PR) activity and deployment workflows to identify blockers and maintain momentum.
  • Collaborate with leadership and stakeholders to gather feature requirements and translate them into actionable tickets and workflows.
  • Build and maintain a clear release roadmap using Jira and GitHub Projects.
  • Define, communicate, and enforce best practices for branching strategy, PR approvals, commit conventions, and workflow documentation.
  • Track and report on sprint velocity, issue progress, and development bottlenecks.
  • Create and refine lightweight documentation inside Jira, GitHub, and Confluence.
  • Directly contribute to the codebase, refactoring and implementing prototypes approved by executive leadership.
  • Prioritize tickets and provide sufficient detail for developers to work efficiently.
  • Communicate timelines, progress, and challenges to leadership, helping juggle requests against the development schedule.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software development experience (TypeScript, React, Express, REST API).
  • At least 4 years of full-stack development experience.
  • Experience refactoring AI-assisted prototype code to MVP.
  • Experience with React Native or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with geospatial applications and/or Mapbox is a plus.
  • 3–6 years of technical project management experience, ideally with small dev teams and fast-paced delivery cycles.
  • Deep familiarity with Jira and GitHub as project management tools (issues, PR reviews, labels, milestones, project boards).
  • Experience running Agile/Scrum ceremonies and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing parallel workstreams.
  • Able to speak both “developer” and “stakeholder” fluently—translating between vision and execution.
  • Comfortable working in a start-up-like environment with shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and limited resources.
  • Background in software development, ideally in a start-up culture.

Tech Stack

  • Azure for all infrastructure
  • GitHub with Actions for deployments to Azure Containers
  • Node, TypeScript, Express with TypeORM
  • React (SPA), Tailwind, TanStack, Jotai, React Hook Form
  • Mapbox, turf.js
  • Microsoft SQL / Azure SQL

What Makes This Role Unique?

  • You’ll be part of a start-up team inside a larger corporate umbrella—Hillpointe’s culture is innovative, energetic, and fun.
  • Direct access to leadership and a real opportunity to shape how technology drives our business.
  • The chance to build processes, culture, and products from the ground up.
  • High visibility with company founders and executive leadership.
