Under general supervision of the Maintenance Shop Assistant Manager, assists in the execution of day to day operations within the Maintenance Department, including technical support for on-going projects.

Essential Duties
  • Assigns work to Journey Mechanics and others and prioritizes the work assignments to ensure that projects and operational needs are met. Maintains special projects schedule to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provides management assistance with daily shop operations and Maintenance Department projects. Oversees the work of maintenance employees to ensure established standards, policies and procedures for work performance and safety and security requirements are followed and ensures quality and quantity of work is maintained. Notifies management of work issues and deficiencies.
  • Provides technical assistance to troubleshoot problems and determine direction of repairs. Acts as an advisor on actions and decisions concerning service, repair and maintenance of agency fleet equipment. Determines which new parts are required and assists in failure analysis procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance in the purchase and maintenance of Maintenance Department diagnostic software and hardware. Ensures that maintenance software and hardware is continually updated to current technology. This includes providing assistance to the IT Department and to Maintenance staff to A) ensure inventory and applications are up to date and efficient, B) ensure functional cabling and interface is in place for all applications, and C) load and test software programs to newly issued laptops.
  • Maintains the Maintenance Department repair and service manual library, including updates to current files and manuals.
  • Coordinates communications between the shop operations and parts departments to ensure parts availability and stocking levels are maintained.
  • Provides management assistance to on-going Maintenance projects.
  • Assists in the monitoring of vendor performance to ensure company requirements are met. Assists in the coordination and negotiation with vendors/suppliers and contractors to resolve issues with warranty repairs, warranty recovery, equipment performance, purchases and supplies.
  • Acts as an advisor to Maintenance department Programs and Projects manager on equipment specifications and purchases.
  • Provides support of new coach acceptance procedures, including delivery verification and distribution of service and parts literature. Works with coach manufacturers on corrections and improvements to service literature.
  • Performs skilled mechanical tasks of a Journeyman Mechanic as needed including driving the coach as necessary.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible journey level experience in vehicular maintenance including mechanical repair on diesel powered equipment.
  • Possession of a complete set of heavy equipment tools and a roll away tool box.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of Maintenance IT technology application software and hardware.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State driver's license and a CDL license with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed within 90 days of hire.
  • Must pass the Supervisory Potential pre-employment test.
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including grave, weekends, & holidays at assigned base. 
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen (unless already in a safety sensitive position at Community Transit).

An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Qualification to enter this position requires knowledge of the following:

    • Principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures pertinent to vehicular maintenance and inspections.
    • Operation and the maintenance function of heavy duty diesel and automotive equipment.
    • Computerized diagnostic equipment. Including Maintenance Department hardware and software applications.
    • Health and safety hazards precautions and proper use of safety equipment.
    • Computer applications, word processing, and spreadsheet software (including MS Word and EXCEL).
    • Established company policy and procedures.
    • The maintenance shop rules and regulations.
    • Fleet Anywhere (fleet maintenance software). To include looking up part replacement history by part number, repair history by task code and work order status).
  • Qualification to enter this position requires skill in:

    • Communication (written, oral and presentation) as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc.
    • Use of diagnostic equipment including software.
    • Diesel/gas engine and transmission diagnostic and repair.
    • Technical application of computer hardware and software.
    • Supervision, direction, evaluation and motivation and influencing of employees.
    • Analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting.
    • Using Microsoft Office Software - specifically Word and Excel.
    • Repair and maintenance of electrical, hydraulic, diesel engine and transmission rebuild and air systems.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Respond to and analyze operating problems, develop and implement appropriate corrective actions.
    • Recognize the need for individual deficiencies and make appropriate recommendations for training.
    • Conduct "hands on training" of Maintenance employees when necessary. Provide technical assistance to Mechanics to assist them in determining how to make repairs.
    • Be a collaborative team member.
    • Effectively prioritize tasks and manage multiple priorities.
    • Problem solve and make effective decisions.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Previous experience in planning, scheduling and reviewing the work of mechanical employees is desired.

Working Conditions


Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, carrying. 

This position is considered safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation and is subject to drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Community Transit authority.
