The Role

We're looking for an experienced Technical Lead to be the technical bridge between product vision and engineering execution. This is a high-impact role where you'll own end-to-end technical planning, architecture, and implementation leadership for our payment infrastructure products.

This is NOT an engineering management role - you won't be doing 1-on-1s or performance reviews. This is pure technical leadership. You'll be the person our team can hand a product spec to with full confidence that robust architecture, clear documentation, and solid implementation will follow - without needing his input at every step.

What You'll Do

Architecture & Design

  • Own system architecture for new features and products end-to-end

  • Design scalable, resilient payment infrastructure solutions

  • Create comprehensive technical documentation and system design specs

  • Make day-to-day technical decisions within our established tech stack

Technical Leadership

  • Be the technical authority the engineering team (4 seniors, 4 juniors) can rely on

  • Lead technical planning and break down complex features into implementable work

  • Guide technical decisions and set engineering standards

  • Provide technical mentorship and code review for the team

Hands-On Contribution

  • Write code when necessary - this isn't just a planning role

  • Lead implementation of critical features and systems

  • Jump in to solve complex technical challenges

  • Set the bar for code quality and best practices

Execution & Delivery

  • Take product requirements from concept to production

  • Ensure features are properly tested, documented, and deployed

  • Remove technical blockers and keep projects moving

  • Communicate progress and technical decisions clearly

What We're Looking For

Must Haves:

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3-4 years in technical leadership roles

  • Strong systems architecture background - you've designed and built complex distributed systems

  • Payments/fintech domain experience - you understand the unique challenges of payment infrastructure, reconciliation, compliance, and reliability

  • Hands-on expertise with our stack:

    • Backend: TypeScript, Golang

    • Infrastructure: AWS (EKS, S3, SQS, etc), Convex

    • Databases: Postgres.

    • Other: Cloudflare, Github, Notion, Slack etc

    • You can both architect AND code in these technologies

  • Proven ability to lead senior engineers - you can earn respect through technical credibility, not just title

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills - you make complex systems understandable

  • Based in Nairobi, Kenya - this role requires on-site presence

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience with East African payment systems (M-Pesa, mobile money, cross-border payments)

  • Background in fast-growing startups or scale-ups

  • Experience with microservices architecture and event-driven systems

  • Familiarity with financial regulations and compliance (PCI-DSS, CBK)

What Success Looks Like

In 6 months, you will have:

  • Taken full ownership of technical planning for multiple features/products

  • Built trust with the engineering team as their go-to technical authority

  • Shipped well-architected, documented features that the CTO didn't need to be involved in

  • Established clear technical standards and patterns the team follows

  • Freed up significant CTO time by becoming the technical execution leader

We have a mature, stable tech stack with long-term vendor relationships. You'll work within this proven ecosystem rather than constantly introducing new tools.
