We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead – Backend Java Engineer to join our team in Madrid. In this role, you will provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on in the development of a large-scale Java/Jakarta EE platform running on JBoss EAP, with a primary focus on backend services, integrations, platform reliability, and release management.
You will lead the technical direction of the backend domain, collaborate closely with Product Owners, Architects, QA, Frontend, and Operations teams, and ensure the successful delivery of high-quality software solutions. The ideal candidate combines strong backend expertise with excellent communication skills, a pragmatic mindset, and a passion for mentoring engineers while driving technical excellence.

YOUR CHALLENGE

• Lead the design, development, and maintenance of Java 21 / Jakarta EE backend applications deployed on JBoss EAP 8.

• Design scalable, maintainable, and reliable software solutions aligned with business and architectural requirements.

• Drive technical decisions around REST APIs, SOAP integrations, messaging, persistence, and application architecture.

• Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

• Own and coordinate application releases, deployments, environment readiness, and production rollout activities.

• Mentor and support engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, knowledge sharing, and coaching.

• Promote engineering best practices, coding standards, architecture governance, and continuous improvement.

• Lead development of integrations using REST, SOAP, JMS, and messaging systems.

• Work closely with Oracle databases, including data modeling, performance tuning, and schema evolution.

• Support frontend teams when backend integration expertise is required.

• Collaborate with QA, DevOps, and Operations teams to ensure smooth delivery and production readiness.

YOUR PROFILE

Must-Have Skills

• Expert-level Java development with strong hands-on experience in Java 21, Jakarta EE, JPA/Hibernate, and Maven multi-module applications.

• Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and enterprise application design principles.

• Experience building and consuming REST and SOAP services using technologies such as JAX-RS and JAX-WS.

• Strong experience with Oracle databases, SQL optimization, schema design, and data persistence.

• Experience with messaging and integration technologies, including JMS and enterprise messaging platforms.

• Strong knowledge of testing practices using JUnit, Mockito, and integration testing frameworks.

• Experience with release management, deployment processes, and production support activities.

• Ability to lead technical discussions, make architectural decisions, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Strong mentoring, coaching, and code review skills.

• Ability to balance hands-on engineering with technical leadership responsibilities.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with Angular, TypeScript, or modern frontend frameworks to support integration efforts when needed.

• Knowledge of OpenAPI Generator, API governance, and contract-first development approaches.

• Experience with Flyway and database migration strategies.

• Familiarity with Splunk, OpenTelemetry, and observability best practices.

• Experience working with Docker-based local development environments.

• Exposure to Kotlin and automated integration testing frameworks.

• Experience driving technical improvements, platform modernization, and engineering process enhancements.

• Experience working in Agile environments with distributed and cross-functional teams.
