The Technical Operator (Network Operations) is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and supporting the organization's telecommunications and network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance, availability, and reliability. Working within the Network Operations Centre (NOC), the role focuses on proactively identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving network issues before they impact service delivery. The successful candidate will leverage networking expertise, analytical skills, and automation tools to maintain network health, support continuous service availability, and contribute to operational excellence. This role requires a proactive individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to delivering high levels of network performance, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
- Continuously monitor the performance, health, and availability of the organization's network infrastructure using network monitoring and management tools.
- Monitor key network performance indicators, including bandwidth utilization, latency, packet loss, throughput, and overall service availability, to proactively identify potential issues.
- Investigate, analyse, and diagnose network alarms, alerts, and incidents, correlating events across multiple network layers to minimize service disruption and reduce Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR).
- Troubleshoot network connectivity, routing, switching, transmission, and infrastructure issues to identify root causes and implement timely corrective actions.
- Respond promptly to network incidents, execute approved recovery procedures, and restore services in accordance with established operational processes and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Participate in post-incident reviews by documenting findings, identifying root causes, and recommending preventive measures to reduce recurring incidents.
- Execute emergency network changes and maintenance activities while adhering to established change management policies and operational governance procedures.
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of network incidents, troubleshooting activities, configuration changes, and operational procedures within the organization's ticketing and knowledge management systems.
- Maintain and update network documentation, including logical and physical network diagrams, inventory records, equipment configurations, fibre route maps, and asset registers.
- Escalate complex or critical technical issues to senior engineers, field operations teams, equipment vendors, or third-party service providers in accordance with defined escalation procedures.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities, including firmware upgrades, security patch installation, configuration backups, system health checks, and hardware diagnostics.
- Support network capacity planning by monitoring utilisation trends and identifying potential performance bottlenecks before they affect network operations.
- Track, analyse, and report on key operational metrics, including network uptime, incident response times, SLA compliance, system availability, and operational performance indicators.
- Identify repetitive operational tasks and collaborate with engineering teams to implement automation, scripting, and workflow improvements that enhance operational efficiency.
- Support the implementation, testing, and deployment of new network technologies, infrastructure upgrades, and service improvements.
- Collaborate closely with network engineering, cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, application support teams, and external service providers to ensure seamless network operations and service continuity.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, security standards, regulatory requirements, and operational best practices during all network activities.
- Contribute to disaster recovery planning, business continuity initiatives, and network resilience by supporting redundancy testing and recovery exercises.
- Stay up to date with emerging networking technologies, virtualization platforms, cloud networking solutions, automation tools, and industry best practices to support continuous improvement.
- Participate in shift rotations, including evenings, weekends, public holidays, and on-call support where required, to provide continuous monitoring and operational coverage.
- Perform any other technical or operational duties assigned to support the reliability, security, and continuous improvement of the organization's network infrastructure.
