The Role
As the Tech Lead Manager, you will lead an engineering team, drive project delivery, manage workflows, and provide technical leadership while maintaining hands-on involvement in system design and architecture.
Summary Generated by Built In

Imagine having the power to stress-test an entire power grid against a hurricane before the clouds even gather. That is the reality we are creating at Neara.
We use advanced machine learning to create engineering-grade, physics enabled digital twins of electricity grids across four continents, this helps asset owners understand their biggest challenges and bring the most viable solutions to life across millions of kilometres of infrastructure.
By simulating extreme weather and structural stress at a network-wide scale, we empower the world’s largest utilities to pinpoint risks, optimise investments and build a more resilient global energy future.
Our team is a collection of brilliant minds who are fanatical about making a tangible difference in the real world, utilising AI and machine learning to accelerate everything from data classification to complex scenario analysis. We have built a special culture where innovation thrives because everyone owns the mission and we need smart, creative people to help us scale this impact to every corner of the globe.

We’re looking for several experienced Tech Lead Managers to each lead one of Neara's core engineering teams. Our organisation is divided into specialised domains, ranging from 3D experience and Graphics to Spatial ML Digitisation, Structural Design and Cloud Fabric. Depending on your background, we will align you with the team where you can have the most impact.
This is a people-first leadership role with strong technical depth. You’ll spend around 60% of your time leading teams and driving delivery, with the remaining 40% staying hands-on to guide system design and tackle complex technical challenges.

Team Leadership & Delivery (Primary Focus)
  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team, supporting both technical development and career progression.

  • Own delivery for your team’s domain: Setting clear goals, defining milestones, and ensuring projects ship reliably and sustainably.

  • Build strong team structures, workflows, and development practices that balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.

  • Proactively manage workload distribution and delivery planning to ensure reliable execution and long-term team effectiveness

  • Create clarity in ambiguous problem spaces, helping teams break down complex technical challenges into achievable plans.

  • Foster strong collaboration with Product, Customer Success and Sales teams to ensure alignment and effective execution.

  • Act as a role model for communication, accountability, and engineering culture.

  • Partner closely with other Tech Lead Managers to coordinate cross-team delivery, share learnings, and drive consistency in engineering standards and practices.

Technical Leadership (Hands-on)

As a technical leader for an engineering group, you will work across a modern, multi-language stack that combines a Dart-based client application, high-performance C++/Rust computation and simulation engines, and a Java backend for large-scale data services and APIs. We also have Machine Learning teams integrating Python-based ML pipelines and computer vision models into the core product to power digital twin generation and intelligent infrastructure analysis. In this role, you’ll work hands-on across some of the following areas:

  • Contribute to system design and architectural decisions across performance-critical components.

  • Write and review production-quality code to support engineering-grade models, simulation engines, and 3D visualisations.

  • Develop algorithms that generate accurate models from imperfect, real-world data.

  • Design data structures that support real-time interaction over very large datasets.

  • Help optimise rendering performance, memory usage, and system reliability.

  • Work with diverse data sources including LiDAR, aerial imagery, and photogrammetry.

  • Support real-time collaboration and live-update algorithms within the platform.

Organisational Impact
  • Raise the technical bar across the engineering organisation through standards, mentorship, and example.

  • Influence engineering best practices, tooling, and long-term platform direction.

  • Help scale Neara’s engineering culture as the company grows.

Who you are:

Experience we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience as both a technical leader and people manager, including project delivery, team leadership, and building effective engineering workflows.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a customer mindset, collaborating closely with Product and customer-facing teams, and occasionally engaging directly with external stakeholders to understand real-world needs and constraints.

  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, and SOLID principles.

  • Professional experience building complex, production-grade systems.

  • Experience mentoring engineers at multiple levels and leading technical projects end-to-end.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Nice-to-haves:

  • Domain experience in 3D rendering, geospatial systems, utilities, or infrastructure software.

  • Strong mathematical reasoning skills; mechanical or civil engineering background.

Characteristics we look for:

  • No-ego, outcome-oriented team players. We always have each
    other’s backs.

  • A strong and independent work ethic. We go beyond our customers’ expectations.

  • Conscientious and detail-oriented execution. We influence large-scale investment decisions and deliver polished, pristine outcomes.

  • A collaborative and principled leader who challenges directly, operates authentically, and upholds high standards.

Note: To ensure we can dedicate enough time to team-matching and a high-quality interview experience, we’ll be accepting applications for this round until 27 February.

Why work here:
  • Competitive salary + ESOP. Significant career development and growth opportunities.

  • Fully flexible working arrangements with a well-stocked office in Redfern.

  • Highly meritocratic, non-bureaucratic, and no-ego work culture.

  • The opportunity to work on complex, meaningful products and real-world problems.

  • The opportunity to play a direct, critical role in the trajectory of a high growth company.

  • Neara values diversity, belonging, and equal employment opportunities. We encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply.
