The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience.

We are seeking a Teaching Assistant to join the team! In this role, the assistant will prepare materials and conduct preliminary research for the Fall 21-410 Research Topics in Mathematical Science class at CMU, which will be run in an REU (research experience for undergraduates) style. The students in this class will be split into groups to learn cutting-edge research topics in number theory, analysis and related fields by conducting the research under the guidance of a faculty leader and graduate student co-leader. Students will learn collaborative, presentation and writing skills. The assistant will help draft problem topics, prepare preliminary lectures on content, do background reading, assist in documenting research finds in writing and investigate interesting directions that projects could take, helping ensure a smooth-running, successful semester for the students.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty members with classroom instruction, exams, record keeping and other miscellaneous projects.
  • Hand out assignments & grade papers.
  • Obtain materials needed for classes, including texts & other materials.  Prepare presentations for and/or deliver lectures.
  • Proctor examinations and record grades.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Demonstrated analytical, communication, problem-solving, and reasoning skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
