An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Taxonomist / Lab Consultant to join our Ecology team in Nelson. This is an exciting time for our Nelson Ecology Team with new projects kicking off and an upcoming move into our new purpose-built office and lab located in Richmond.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work closely with the Nelson team to:
- Process and identify macroinvertebrate samples from marine and freshwater environments in the customised taxonomy laboratory.
- Perform data collection, data entry and tabulation.
- Willingness to develop marine and/or freshwater taxonomy skills.
- Ability to work in a close team environment.
Skills and experience
To have an effective start to the role you will ideally have:
- University qualifications in some element of environmental science or a minimum of two years relevant work experience.
- Experience in processing and accurately identifying benthic macroinvertebrates from New Zealand using identification keys.
- Experience with using stereo and compound microscopes.
- Experience with establishing and maintaining reference collections.
- Experience compiling data as well as maintaining data records and files.
- Field work experience in freshwater and/or the marine environment would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills.
- A clean and active New Zealand driver’s licence.
- New Zealand citizenship/working rights are essential.
