As Tax Manager, you will report directly to our CFO and work closely with senior leadership on all tax-related initiatives within our firm. This role is a means to make a difference: you will play a pivotal role in crafting and implementing the firm's tax strategy, ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations, and adapting our approach to align with our evolving business needs. You will collaborate with a talented, accomplished, and experienced group of colleagues from a variety of functions to help shape the future of the firm. As the primary tax authority on tax matters within our firm, you will support both corporate and fund-level tax work and focus on tax planning, research, compliance, and ongoing monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance and Monitoring
  • Develop tax strategies and policies that help maintain compliance with applicable tax laws
  • Monitor current and impending changes to tax regulation (e.g., changes to Section 174 or Self-employment tax rules) and make appropriate updates to our policies and strategies
  • Regularly review and reassess the firm's tax framework to ensure alignment with evolving regulatory and business needs
  • Tax Research
  • Conduct research on complex tax issues that impact Voleon funds and management companies, including nuances of Subchapter K and partnership taxation, employment tax, and regulations in both US and international jurisdictions
  • Evaluate the tax implications of expanding into new markets and launching new products
  • Advisory and Planning
  • Actively participate in the planning and implementation of new products by bringing in a strategic tax perspective into the design process
  • Deliver tax advice to cross-functional teams including legal, finance, fund accounting, operations, investor relations, business strategy, and senior leadership
  • Tax Filings Review
  • Review and approve tax paperwork prepared by external vendors or internal teams, including Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and 20+ partnership returns across 10+ states 
  • Manage Voleon's relationships with external tax advisors and relevant tax authorities

Requirements

  • 5+ years of tax experience required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is required
  • Previous experience in tax work for quantitative hedge funds is a plus
  • International tax experience is a plus
  • A strong understanding of technical tax issues related to quant hedge funds and the ability to apply that knowledge to practical, often ambiguous, business situations
  • The ability to research complex tax issues involving trading different financial instruments globally
  • Experience preparing and reviewing Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and Form 1065 partnership returns for funds and investors both onshore and offshore, and managing registration of funds in different jurisdictions including state, federal and international is a plus
  • Experience preparing tax election forms including 475(f) and 8832 and what to elect given different account structures is a plus
  • Familiarity with the 871m withholding tax regime and qualified indices is a plus
  • Bachelor's and/or advanced degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or related fields

The base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $160,000 in the location(s) of this posting. Individual salaries are determined through a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography. Base salary does not include other forms of total compensation such as bonus compensation and other benefits. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and AD&D insurance, 20 days of paid time off, 9 sick days, and a 401(k) plan with a company match.
