Taxation Manager – Investments & Governance
The Taxation Manager – Investments & Governance will lead and manage tax-related activities within the investments and governance functions. This role is responsible for overseeing investment due diligence, managing tax governance processes, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The position plays a key role in supporting Mercer Super Fund and Mercer managed funds, managing foreign tax filings, supporting business restructures, and assessing new tax developments to support the organisation's strategic objectives.
We will count on you to:
- Conduct thorough tax due diligence for proposed investments by reviewing legal documents and proposed investment structures, analysing tax implications to identify risks and opportunities, and coordinating with internal teams (investment, legal, implementation) and external advisers to facilitate smooth transaction execution.
- Manage tax governance for Mercer Super Fund and Mercer managed funds, including updating the significant transactions register and tax risk register, preparing risk and compliance reporting, updating internal tax policies and documents, assisting with regulatory reviews (e.g., CAR), reviewing third-party tax policies and testing their processes and controls (e.g., Custodian, Administrator), and managing annual reviews and attestations including third parties and Annual Representation letters.
- Oversee ongoing investment monitoring and compliance by managing various investment-related testing (e.g., CFC, Division 6C), supporting testing of controls across tax functions, regularly monitoring investments to ensure accurate Australian and foreign tax reporting and compliance, managing foreign tax filings as required, liaising with overseas tax advisers, and identifying and addressing any tax issues arising during the lifecycle of investments.
- Provide technical tax support to internal stakeholders such as Fund Accounting, Unit Pricing, and Treasury, and report to various Committees and Boards on tax developments and changes.
- Participate in and manage tax-related business initiatives and projects, including new business proposals, new client installations, and industry developments.
What you need to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field; professional qualifications such as CPA, CA, or Masters of Law are preferred.
- Strong experience in investments tax, tax advisory/compliance, or a related field, preferably within managed funds, superannuation, or financial services.
- Strong understanding of Australian taxation laws and regulations related to investments and managed funds.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
