About the Role
Coaction Specialty Insurance Group is seeking a Tax & Investment Associate to join its Finance Department. This is an entry-level position supporting both the Tax and Investment Accounting teams, with a primary focus on corporate income tax, insurance tax compliance, and investment-related tax reporting for a multi-entity consolidated insurance group. Investment accounting focus will primarily be on custodian bank reporting and reconciliations, expense processing, investment valuations and cash flow.
This role offers broad exposure to the tax life cycle of a specialty insurance company — from quarterly provision through annual compliance — working directly with Tax and Investment directors, as well as external advisors. It is well suited to a candidate early in their career who wants hands-on experience across GAAP and statutory tax accounting, federal and state compliance, and investment tax data.
Key Responsibilities — TaxIncome Tax Provision & Compliance Support
Assist in the preparation of the quarterly and annual income tax provisions under ASC 740 (including interim reporting under ASC 740-270) for the consolidated group
Support statutory income tax reporting under SSAP 101 for the group's insurance entities
Assist in analyzing book-tax differences related to the investment portfolio
Assist in documenting provision workpapers and responding to auditor requests
Support the preparation and review of federal and state income tax returns prepared by the group's external tax preparer, including gathering data, preparing PBC (prepared-by-client) items, and tracking open requests
Premium Tax Processing & Compliance Tracking
Process premium tax returns and estimated payments prepared by the group's external premium tax provider, including routing for review, signature, and funding, and record all filings and payments in the department's tax compliance tracking system
Reconcile the tax compliance tracker to the general ledger on a recurring basis and maintain the tax calendar across federal, state, and specialty filing deadlines
Key Responsibilities — Investment Team Support
Account Reconciliations
Perform monthly custodian par and general ledger account reconciliations.
Alternative Investment Valuations
Support periodic valuations of limited partnership and structure note holdings.
Investment Expense Processing
Process investment manager and custodian bank invoices.
Statutory Deposit Management
Maintain and monitor statutory state deposits, track balances against regulatory requirements and supporting additions, substitutions, or releases as needed.
Investment Cash Flow
Track private placement fundings and limited partnership capital calls and distributions, supporting timely and accurate settlement
Monitor custodian cash activity and projected cash flows, communicating funding needs and available balances to the Investment team

Bachelor's degree in Accounting
0–2 years of relevant experience in public accounting, corporate tax, or a finance/accounting role; new graduates with relevant internship or coursework experience are encouraged to apply
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel; comfort working with large data sets
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and willingness to learn
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and communicate clearly with internal teams and external advisors
**This role must sit in our Morristown, NJ office on our hybrid schedule, being in office no less than 3 days a week**.
Salary range specific to for this role : $55,000-$70,000 + discretionary incentive bonus + benefits depends on various factors including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance. The offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, experience, and qualifications. In addition, employees are eligible for standard benefits package including paid time off, medical, dental and retirement.
