Position Summary:
The Tax Analyst will play a key role in the preparation and filing of sales and use tax returns, ensuring timely and accurate submissions. The role involves reviewing monthly tax accruals, answering technical tax questions, and updating tax rates in proprietary software. This position will assist with tax-related audits, support FERC regulatory reporting, and contribute to tax research and special projects. The Tax Analyst will identify potential tax issues and efficiencies while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of tax trends and best practices.
Job Responsibilities:
- Tax Return Preparation: Prepare monthly and quarterly sales/use tax returns, including monthly accruals for specific tax liabilities (e.g., Minnesota compressor fuel use tax).
- Tax Accrual Review: Evaluate the appropriateness of monthly tax accruals (25-30% of time).
- Technical Support: Answer questions regarding the application of sales and use taxes to transactions or invoices.
- Software Updates: Make necessary changes to sales and use tax rates in proprietary software (10-15% of time).
- Tax Holds Review: Daily review and research of tax holds to resolve issues (10-15% of time).
- Forecast Support: Assist in updating the monthly forecast for taxes (10-15% of time).
- Regulatory Reporting: Support FERC regulatory reporting and rate case filings, and prepare Form 2 tax schedules (10-15% of time).
- Audit Assistance: Help prepare responses for federal and state tax audits, coordinating with the manager (5-10% of time).
- Research & Special Projects: Research complex tax issues, prepare special tax filings, and identify potential tax savings opportunities (5-10% of time).
- Record Maintenance: Maintain permanent tax files and records (5-10% of time).
- Professional Development: Stay current with tax trends by attending seminars, reading newsletters, and networking (5-10% of time).
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or equivalent experience (six years of relevant work experience without a degree).
- Two or more years of practical accounting experience, with at least one year of relevant tax experience. Experience with Vertex or similar tax software is preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills for creating schedules and summaries for management.
- Effective organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Willingness to work extended hours during critical periods, such as tax filing deadlines.
- Intermediate computer proficiency and familiarity with tax-related software.
- Working knowledge of tax principles and compliance.
