What You Will Accomplish With Us

As an Underwriter, you will be at the heart of our mission. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assess risks associated with disability insurance, life insurance and critical illness insurance applications to make fair, consistent underwriting decisions aligned with the organization’s risk and profitability objectives.
  • Analyze and interpret medical and non-medical information to identify potential risks and apply a holistic approach to overall risk assessment.
  • Apply established underwriting guidelines, practices and procedures to make informed decisions and ensure sound management of underwriting files.
  • Ensure the accuracy of underwriting assessments while meeting service standards, turnaround times and team quality expectations.
  • Communicate with internal and external clients, as well as various stakeholders, to obtain additional information or clarify matters related to underwriting decisions.
  • Collaborate with underwriting team members and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes to support operational efficiency and enhance the client experience.

What Will Help You Succeed in This Role

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is recognized for their strong expertise in individual disability insurance underwriting, as well as their knowledge of life insurance and critical illness insurance products, gained through a minimum of 10 years of industry experience.
  • Stands out for their analytical thinking, sound judgment, attention to detail and ability to solve complex problems while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of underwriting principles, systems and manuals used by insurers and reinsurers, along with extensive knowledge of industry practices.
  • Is recognized for their client- and advisor-focused approach, strong communication, negotiation and organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Holds a college diploma or university degree in Health Sciences or a related field. The Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) designation, FLMI designation, or active pursuit of either designation is considered a strong asset.
  • Has an intermediate level of proficiency in both French and English, as the role involves daily communication by email and telephone with French- and English-speaking clients, business partners and various stakeholders across Canada to obtain additional information, clarify case details and support underwriting decisions.

Skills Required

  • Minimum 10 years of industry experience in individual disability insurance underwriting
  • Expertise with life insurance and critical illness insurance products
  • Ability to analyze and interpret medical and non-medical information for risk assessment
  • Thorough understanding of underwriting principles, insurer/reinsurer systems and manuals, and industry practices
