Job Description:

The Tackling Chronic Absenteeism Project (TCAP) Mentor, through a combination of one-on-one support, group work, and family engagement, help students and families identify and address the barriers to attendance. The TCAP Mentor will provide the following professional services: facilitating weekly restorative circles (which teach students socialization, communication, and conflict management skills), tutoring, mentoring, providing academic enrichment opportunities, supporting parent/caregiver engagement and empowerment through home visits, calls, and email, developing student workshops, training and coaching volunteers, teaching peer mentoring skills, and professional development.
The position will primarily be in-person with one remote day per week during the school year and two remote days per week during the summer. The role also requires regular work off-campus to support students and families at various sites, so access to reliable transportation is required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in Weekly TCAP Programing: Research and organize restorative practices and mentoring materials. Facilitate restorative practice circles and peer mentorship trainings. Develop and update TCAP curriculum with support of the TCAP staff. Attend parent/student conferences as requested. Assist with workshop presentations. Tutor TCAP students.
  • Program Administration and Evaluation: Assist in evaluation of the TCAP program, by tracking services and referrals provided, reminding parents/caregivers and students about form and survey deadlines, and entering data from anonymous student and parent surveys. Assist with volunteer trainings. Attend all TCAP team meetings, team trainings, and CFCC staff and UBalt Law staff meetings. Attend and present at TCAP school meetings as requested.
  • Parent Support: Identify and reach out to the parents/caregivers/families in the TCAP and assist in linking them to requested services with the primary contacts in the assigned school. Make home visits, telephone calls, and school visits. Send parents/caregivers reminders about TCAP session and meetings. Support and assess community referral parents/caregivers to identify, progress, and achieve their case goals. Compose and send monthly parent e-newsletters with resources and program updates. Provide in-person benefit application and courtroom support.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field

One year of working with youth in teaching, coaching, counseling and/or mentoring, as well as familiarity with truancy issues and restorative practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of related experience working with parents/caregivers and students.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Strong interpersonal, leadership, organizational, communication or team skills. Previous demonstrated ability to help (may include tutoring or mentoring, coaching, etc.). Ability to use problem solving skills. Ability to work independently and in potentially stressful situations. Good time management skills. Ability to work with confidential information. Ability to effectively supervise a team of volunteers and oversee groups of students. Ability to follow instructions, work with minimal supervision, and mange and complete multiple tasks. 

Special hours required

Some calls to parents/caregivers or guardians will have to be made in the evening hours.
